MMC 10HP Tonneau
Interesting period photo sent in to
Rootschat by David Lane (UK) asking for repair and tidy-up of the
photo. Repair and superb hand colouring by Iria. Photo of Grandfather
and family in Brigg, Lincolnshire.--
Great colourising by Iria ! Registration seems to be R 1412 which is
Derby County Council but no dating data available pre 1921. This
car was made in Coventry by the Motor Manufacturing Co and is a cca
1903 MMC 10HP Tonneau. Talks to merge
with Daimler, but was liquidated in 1904.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1905 Arrol Johnston 12HP Dogcart
Interesting period photo sent in to
Rootschat by Greenvalley (UK) asking for
origin of car registrartion SB 117. --
Registration is County Council of
Argyll, Scotland. but no dating data available pre 1929; likely cca
1905/6. The car is Scottish made in Paisley (Glasgow). The vehicle is a
cca
1905 Arrol Johnston 12HP Dogcart. The
six seater body has two seats in front of the driver facing forward,
two for driver and passenger facing forward behind the steering
wheel, and two facing backwards.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
Probably 1905 Fiat 24'32 Tourer
Interesting period photo sent to us by Henry Davis (Mexico)
for identification. Picture was reportedly taken in Mexico City about 1910. --
The 'look' suggests an early German Daimler Mercedes but our Ariejan
Bos thinks neither Mercedes nor
competitor Benz. Most likely it is an Italian
cca 1905 Fiat 24'32 Tourer,
having the Mercedes look which was popular in Italy at the time. Most
FIATs had angular radiators but the 1905 24'32 and the 60 HP had
slightly curved radiator and bonnet.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1906 Argyll 14'16 Tourer
Interesting period photo sent in to
Rootschat by Sheila M (UK) asking for
dating and identification of the car, possibly the first car in Leyburn.
Model T? --
Registration is unfortunately just not
visible, but seems to start with 'C' which would fit Yorkshire. Definitely
not a Model T Ford. Not American but Scottish, made in Alexandria, and
was the biggest manufacturer in Scotland. This looks quite a big car so
is probably the
cca
1906 Argyll 14'16 Tourer. Closed 1908,
rebirth 1910, last car 1928.

Chenard Walcker Fiacre de Paris
Surfing through the internet in
attempting to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs of
very interesting old machinery which has not yet been identified. --
"New Paris - Lady Drivers - Woman
of the World". Another stock photo shows same lady with a Chauffer!!
Suggestion Taxi but no Taxameter is visible, nor is the Lady dressed as
a Chaffeuse. Dimples to sides of rad and bolts on face of rad midway
down suggest this is cca
1906 Chenard & Walcker 14CV Fiacre de Paris.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1909
Brasier 11'15 Tourer
Cinema screen grab taken from a Danish film
"Mor Bag Rattet", made in 1965 where
cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Taken from novel 'Mum behind the
wheel' and involving a trotting horse and a veteran car!
--
Suggestions on the IMCDB site that it might be a Mors or Minerva or
Clement Talbot. Right country from the fashion of the curvy
bonnet but wrong make. Manufactured in Paris, this is a
cca
1909 Brasier 11'15 Tourer, a post
Richard Brasier and pre Chaigneau Brasier.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1912 Rover 12 Tourer
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify the vehicle
posted on a Facebook page. from Masterton ollection. Caption -
circa 1920 the Percy family of 'Ellesmere'. --
There is an Ellesmere near Liverpool in the UK but there is also one in
Canterbury New Zealand. The big cactus may suggest NZ. The car is
British but has no registration which was mandatory in the UK. This is
an Owen Clegg designed
cca 1912 Rover 12 Tourer with
4-cylinder engine of 2297cc.

Hansa Lloyd Doppelphaeton
Another photo received from Ian Berg
(Australia)
asking if we can identify make of cars sold
by Jas A Munro of Melbourne and Sydney in the 1920s. --
Study of the complex back/front
spring arrangements and the wheel hubs suggested a Belgian 1913
Springuel 16'20HP which became Imperia, and for which they were agents.
Our Ariejan Bos however thinks from the mudguards, the louvres. bonnet
handle and wheel hubs, this is German and a cca 1912 Hansa Lloyd
Doppelphaeton.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913
Unic C7 12HP Landaulette
Period photo sent in to Rootschat by
Pippakit (UK) asking
for dating and identification of the car as grandfather driving the car
was chauffeur to Lord Leverhulme. --
Looked familiar and found on Help
Page 18 as
having been received from
Crossley Website as not a Crossley car. This was made in Paris,
France, by Georges Richard and is a cca
1913 Unic C7 12HP Landaulette. Sold in
UK by Mann & Overtons of Westminster, Unic-s were very popular in
London as the primary Taxi of the day.

Ford Model T Centerdoor'Tourer
Another from a batch of interesting
photos received from Mike Sanders (USA)
from Montana, which they have not been able to identify. This
photo looks like a mid 1920's road trip. The hood is open on the
front car. Location unknown. --
Very small indistinct blurry photo but we are relatively sure both cars
are Model
T Fords. The left car, with the bonnet
off, is a post 1917 'Centerdoor' Sedan, possibly as on HP
145 , and on the right, a post 1917
Model T Tourer, - both with running board racks.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: c1917
Ford Model T Touring
Another from a batch of interesting
photos received from Mike Sanders (USA)
from Montana, which they have not been able to identify. This photo
looks 1920's. --
This is a very poor faded and
scratched blurry photo which we have tried to recover to be viewable.
Regretfully the children's faces could not be recovered. The car detail
is also lost so accurate dating cannot be made. This is a post
cca 1917
Ford Model T Ford Touring, and it could be the touring model shown on
above photo.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1919
Ford Model T Touring Special
Surfing through the internet in
attempting to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs of
very interesting old machinery which has not yet been identified. --
Interesting photo because it is of a much modified standard car altered
to be just like a standard car. Main ID features are
the transverse front spring, curved radiator and non-demountable
wheels. This dates original vehicle to a cca
1919 Ford Model T Touring. It has no louvres,
and scuttle mounted petrol tank.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1919
Ford Model T Pick-up
Surfing through the internet in
attempting to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs of
very interesting old machinery which has not yet been identified. --
Following on from the above photo, this is a commercial version of the
same vehicle which had the same front and radiator. This is also a cca
1919 Ford Model T, but is a Pick-up.
Various versions of commercials were made including depot hacks and tankers,
and a version made for the Military. It has number on skirt?

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Perhaps
1921 Earl Model 40 Touring
On Help
Page 53 is shown
a cca 1920s American Tourer photo of which was sent to us by Dan
Gillitzer (USA)
taken in USA, which he is trying to
identify. It may be a 1920 Studebaker. --
Much discussion including our
friends at the AACA who were relatively sure it is not a Studebaker.
Various names have been forward including Buick, Wescott and
Commonwealth. We now have a suggestion from Varun Coutinho that it is a
cca
1921 Earl Model 40 Touring. There are
indeed similarities!

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1924 Mathis GM Torpedo
Surfing through the internet in
attempting to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs of
very interesting ancient machinery which has not yet been identified. --
This one has a relatively easy
identificationb feature is you know the roundel. It is a French car
built in Alsace originallyb Hermes designed by Ettore Bugatti. This is
a
cca 1924 Mathis GM Torpedo. Closed
down 1935 having flirted Ford France and Matford, plant
damaged in WW2. To 1950 making aero engines.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: c1925
Citroen Model C3 Torpedo Special
Another on the theme of disguising
the base automobile found while surfing through the internet in
attempting to identify old vehicles which have not yet been identified. --
Fascinating photo because it is of a very much modified standard car altered
to look much more modern than it was. The only recognisable item, had
it not been covered by a winter warmer, would have been the radiator.
It is longer chassis cca
1925 Citroen Model C3, with different
wings, shocks, wheels, badge bar..

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1925 Buick Master Six Sedan
Another from a batch of interesting
photos received from Mike Sanders (USA)
from Montana, which they have not been able to identify. This
portrait is tagged as Denver, Colorado. --
Quite a few American cars of that period had slightly wavy bonnet and widows
peak type radiator tops, so it is little difficult to identify
with someone blocking out most of the rad. Fortunately the patterned headlights
and strengthening bar she is sitting on suggest this is a cca
1925 Buick Master Six, 50 Sedan.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1930 Dunelt and 1930 Morgan
Interesting period photo of a tree-wheeler
and a motorcycle sent in to
Rootschat asking for
dating and identification? --
Registration of the motorcycle WX8446 is WR Yorks CC of Mid 1930.
Advised by Martin Shelly that the unusual motorcycle is a Sheffield
built cca 1930 Dunelt
with
Sturmley-Archer 298 cc engine. Dunelt cycles to 1960. The vehicle in
the background is looks to be a tree wheeler and having no rad seems to
be the later air cooled cca 1930 Morgan Family De Luxe
Runabout.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1930s Jaguar SS 90'100 Sports
Interesting photo received from
Michel Cann (UK) who is trying
to identify the make and model of this car, any ideas ? --
Photograph, taken 'portrait', seems to have been taken in France and
the car seems to be at some sort of an exhibition. The car depicted is
a
SS 90-100 Jaguar made by SS cars
1935-41. Very popular cars whose performance was a bit less than its
looks! In view of such good modern reproductions it is difficult to
tell from this photo if it is a genuine article, or a
replica.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1932 Peugeot 201 C Saloon
Another photo received from Giorgio Tardi (Italy)
which he took in a cafe at Lisbon Airport.
He thought it may be a Lancia Augusta but doors wrong. Perhaps French?
--
Photo of a photo taken behind glass so reflections confuse. Initally
looked like a Fiat Ballilla but other things do not seem to be
right. Only two louvres can be seen and photo suggests that these
louvres are horizontal (lower ones not visible?). Very
likely candiate is therefore a cca 1932 Peugeot 201 C Saloon
(made 1929-37).

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1934 Hudson Eight Sedan
Another from a batch of interesting
photos received from Mike Sanders (USA)
from Montana, which they have not been able to identify. This
probably California in the late '30s. --
Our Mark Dawber advises this is a cca
1934 Hudson Eight Sedan. This one is
the 'standard' model on the 123" wheelbase. There was a Deluxe
model with nicer interior but that one had fender lamps. There was also
a lower price model on a shorter wheelbase but that did nott have the
vent windows in the front doors.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1936 Stout Scarab Sedan
Photo
taken by PD (UK) while
at Concours d'Elegance at Hampton Court and later wanted to know what
it was. --
There was a period in the late 20s and early 30s when experimenting
with aerodynamics became the fashion. A number of 'teardrop cars' were
built in Europe and USA (see HP146
for Rumpler). This is one of nine
cars built in Detroit Michigan USA by the Stout Motor Car Co. and is a cca
1936 Stout Scarab Sedan, with flexible
seating and powered at rear by 3.6 litre Ford flathead V8.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1949
Northrop YB-49 Bomber
Intriguing unnamed photo found for
sale on Ebay and requiring identification. No other information was
available.. --
Aircraft are not our remit but this photo looked
'touched-up' so wondered if real? Quite genuine, a
1949 Northrop YB-49
Flying Wing Turbojet Bomber prototype.
Two were built. One crashed
killing pilots whose names are used for Forbes and Edwards Airbases in
US. Second cought fire. Both had rumours of possibe industrial
sabotage. Resulted in the B2 Stealth.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
UNIDENTIFIED Early
1900s Town Car
Surfing through the internet in
attempting to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs of
very interesting ancient machinery which has not yet been identified. --
This one remains unidentified despite
investigation by our experts. It seems to have a lot in common with the
bigger French c1904 Mors Landaulette Town Car at Louwman Museum in
Holland but our Ariejan Bos does not think it is one as it is propshaft
drive. Also unlikely are Napier or Panhard & Levassor.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
UNIDENTIFIED Electric
Town Car
Similar vehicle found surfing through the internet in
attempting to identify the above vehicle, which has also not yet been identified. -- ...
And also remains unidentified despite
investigation. This vehicle would appear to be electric and is one of
many 'Early
1900s Electric Town Cars' made in period, started large and grew smaller! Electric cars were popular as Taxis
for a while. Our Ariejan Bos thought perhaps a Krieger, but unlikely.
Lohner had wheel motors, Riker was generally rear engine.
