:: [ SVVS NATIONAL
AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

Another lovely period photo received as a
negative from Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
who asks if we could possibly ID vehicle in the attached photo?
-- No background
to photo. Unclear registration seems to be C 8821 which would be County

Cadillac 30 Touring
Smashing photo received from Rick Cove (Australia)
taken in the Coffs Harbour area of New

Type O Flatbed Lorry
Very frustrating period photo received as a
negative from Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
showing a gas powered truck. 'Can you tell me anything about it
please?' -- Negative
has a very strong moiré pattern making enlargement impossible. Very
unusual lorry with very unusual motive power. Registration DK 336

who asks if we could possibly ID vehicle in the attached photo?
Photo is negative and flipped but it says Ford on radiator.
-- No background
to photo. Transverse spring so relatively easy to define it is a Model
T. Unusual body for the period, five sided bonnet, louvres, small
bulkhead, so all pre 1916. This is a cca

Singer 10 Tourer
Puzzling photo received from Derek
Megginson, Scarborough (UK)
saying he has been trawling the internet with no success, trying
to identify the car taken in the late 1920s in the north of England,
probably around the Huddersfield area. Having stumbled upon our
excellent website.... --
From the windscreen surround looks like a 1918 model but numberplate TB

made in Coventry being a cca

Franklin Model 10B Touring
Not sure of the origin of photo but well worth
sharing on our Help Pages as a vehicle identification aid to automobile
historians, found while on the web researching unknown machinery. Can we name
make? --
Looks a rather well used car, loaded to the gunnels and with a couple
of very cold looking occupants. There is already a photo of this make
on this page, of an earlier model. Air cooled engine and sloping 'rad'
suggest this is a cca
1923 Franklin Model 10B Touring.
Company closed in 1934.

Leyland 2 Ton Livestock Lorry
Another lovely period photo received as a
negative from Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
who asks if we could possibly ID vehicle in the attached photo?
It is a livestock trailer from Keighley but a Burnley reg plate. --
Pneumatic tyres and electrics. CW 6076 is indeed
a Burnley County Borough Council registration of late 1925, which helps
with dating this lorry as a cca
1925 Leyland 2 Ton Livestock Lorry. Started
as Lancashire Steam Motor Co 1896, becoming Leyland Motors 1907, and
BLMC 1968.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1927
Austin Heavy 12'4 Saloon
Puzzling photo received from Derek
Megginson, Scarborough (UK)
saying he has been trawling the internet with no success, trying
to identify the car taken in the late 1920s in the north of England,
probably around the Huddersfield area. Having stumbled upon our
excellent website.... --
From the headlamps on cross bar,
sidelamps on scuttle, D type door handle, fabric roof, six wheel nuts
and steering wheel tells Tony Oakes this is a

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1927
Chandler Royal Eight Sedan
Another photo received from our regular
contributor Raoul Rainer from Stuttgart (Germany) from a batch of
photos he purchased recently and has on a big website on line. Perhaps
Willys-Knight or Safety Stutz but things do not match.
--
Looks easy but was complicated by three banks of nine horisontal
louvres each. Many makes had permutations but did not match. Mark
Dawber suggested Gardiner but only one year matched, a cca
1927 Chandler Royal Eight Sedan. Later
had 11 louvres.

Ford Model A Phaeton
Another interesting photo sent to us by
Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia)
who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify the foreign vehicle
photographed somewhere in the south of the USSR in 1930s ? --
Very unusual non standard radiator embellishment on an American car
that was being negotiated to be built in the USSR. By the end of 1930
the plant in Nizhni Novgrod was turning out Russian Fords, GAZ Model A.
This is a cca
1931 Ford Model A Standard Phaeton,
probably USA.

Mercedes Benz Off-Road Sports
Unusual photo received from Victor Brumby,
Streatley (UK)
archivist for the club 'Europlate' showing an unidentified Mercedes
Benz with a local reg plate D-7090 that doesn't help date it. --
Cannot help with the German plate but the car is a very unusual
Mercedes Benz Open Sports designed for off road competitive events and
was based on the W 153. Only 52 built, 33 being open, looking alike but
designated 230 S/SV and later 170V S/VR and 200 V. Only made in 1938/39
so closely datable!

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1938
Standard Super 12 Saloon
Another puzzling photo from
Facebook received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand)
questioning the model of the Standard in the middle; pre or post WW2 ? --
Chrome over top of waterfall radiator,
three side windows, solid wheels, and bonnet louvres suggest pre-war
1936/40 12 or 16'20. Waterfall grille post 1938. Twin set of
louvers with strip down middle and twin-tone horns suggest a cca
1938 Standard Super 12 Saloon. To the
left is 1937 Nash Lafayette and to right a Vauxhall 12.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1948
Healey Woody Shooting Brake
Lovely photo of an unusual car received
from Anthony Sparling (UK) asking
if we might know what make and model of car is shown .' --
This is a well known car, one of only two survivors. This is cca
1948 Healey Eliott Woody Shooting Brake.
Hector Hobbs of Southampton ordered 17 chassis built/bodied by others.
This one apparently has coachwork by Westland and woodwork by Dibbins
of Southampton. 2.5L 4 cylinder; 105HP; 93mph. Was in California and
restored in Australia.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: c
1949 Morris Minor MM Series 1
Unusual photo received from Victor Brumby,
Streatley (UK)
archivist for the club 'Europlate' showing a Morris Minor MM in front
of South Port Gate in Gibraltar, he is trying to date. Is it likely to
have been one of the early 1948 built ones? --
Regretfully seems not. The first series Morris
Minors MM had a painted section in the
centre of the bumpers due to widening of the production car post
prototypes. This one seems to have a solid chrome bumper suggesting
later, - 1949, and some later 1950.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: UNIDENTIFIED
Buried Chassis
Puzzling photos from Peter Mills and Ash,
Gill, Pete and Dom (UK)
showing a chassis they are digging up in the paddock. Wheelbase
is approximately 120" and track (outer edge of wheel
arch/mudguard) is 67". Battery tray is on the inner side of right
chassis rail as is steering box. Kickplates amidships. Interesting
detail is swaged mudguards. --
Lots of investigation by experts but no conclusive answers. American?
Any thought by anybody would be much appreciated. HELP
PLEASE !

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: UNIDENTIFIED
1950s Microcar
Puzzling Barcelona photos from Luis
Pallás Sancho (Spain) of microcar
he believes not built in Spain, not Spanish plate, nor Spanish engine.--
Lots of investigation but no answer. Microcars were popular in the '50s
with many makes including two (of 7+) important ones in Spain. PTV
was relatively more visually similar than the Biscuter Pegasin.
Biscooter was Voisin designed but licenced to Spain where over 20,000
made. Bigger wheels so could be a Porsche 356 one-off based on cca1959
PTV.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: UNIDENTIFIED
1920s Tourer
Another puzzling photo received from
from Georges Truffaut (Belgium) of a
vehicle he is trying to identify. "Do you have any idea of the
brand of the car in the picture attached hereto. Photograph taken in
France" --
Looks relatively easy but has beaten all our wise sages. None
have been able to give a definitive identification. Probably timber
wheels, common in USA and France. My thoughts from the the large
diameter wheel-hubs is, it could be Audi Imperator, or immediate predecessors.
