:: [ SVVS NATIONAL
AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

We inverted the negative to a positive and added a bit of sepia; lovely

--
Whakatane Hotel dates back to 1895 and was by the ferry terminal on the
Malata side of the River. Car is a Charabanc with three rows of seats.

Surfing through the internet in attempting to
identify old vehicles we often come across photographs or
old Postcards of very interesting ancient machinery which has not yet
been identified, so we have a go ! As photo may be on more than one
website we may not be able to attribute the origin. --
Quite an unusual car being a

Ford Model T Touring
Rather splendid photo received from Mark

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1914
Monopole 269cc Motorcycle
Very interesting photo received from
Stewart Would in Rolston, East Yorkshire (UK),
Bike has Hull registration with a logo that he does not recognise.
-- Lots of
research went into NOT coming up with the answer, until Geoff Morris
suggested this is a Monopole. Monopole made motorcycles in Foleshill,
Coventry from 1902 with gaps to 1927. As this one has no gears and has
a Villiers Mk 1 engine, it is likely latest cca 1916 Monopole 269cc
Motorcycle. No dating help from the registration.

Star 50'60cw Flatbed Lorry
Rather splendid photo received from Mark
Dawber (New

-- Fantastic

A bunch of interesting photos posted on
the AACA website by Deej (Soudi Arabia)
saying his step-father has a sizeable
collection of vintage and veteran cars but has not kept detailed
records, so could anybody help in precise identification." --
Good photo of the bonnet would help in dating but from what is visible,
the smooth line from the bulkhead to
radiator, the small square doors with edging and with small
hinges, would suggest a cca
1913/14 Clement Bayard 10'12 Two-Seater.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1916
International Model F Charabanc
Surfing through the internet in attempting to
identify old vehicles we often come across photographs or

Richard Perrin (UK)
saying "You kindly confirmed identification of a 1910

-- Was
very difficult because car is a one-off built by Cecil Brinton in

Another fuzzy puzzling photo sent to us by Jason

photograph and has not been able to identify the vehicle. " It is
obviously a light car, I believe of English manufacture. No similar

A bunch of interesting photos posted on
the AACA website by Deej (Soudi Arabia)
saying his step-father has a sizeable
collection of vintage and veteran cars but has not kept detailed
records, so could anybody help in precise identification." --
Useful to be able to see the registration plate which looks as if the
car came from Britain. If so, registration XO 1344, if UK, is London
County Council about June 1923. The car is French, a cca 1923 Citroen
Model C 5HP Tourer (5CV, 7.5HP).

Buick 6 Five-Passenger Sedan
Photograph posted on the PreWarCar website by John Rampling (UK)
asking if anybody can identify the car in the photo taken in Barnstaple
about 1930 possibly. --
Registration seems DD 810 which would be Gloucester County Council cca
1924. Barnstaple is not that far away being near Exmoor National Park.
The car is a Buick with the updated radiator so post 1923 and nickel
plated, and nickel strip to scuttle. This would therefore seem to be a cca
1924 Buick Six Five Passenger Sedan.

Morris Oxford Greengrocer Van
Rather grainy photo received from Chris
Bibby (UK)
of the Bibby Coach Holidays fame saying "This is my family firm's
first business venture, am I right in thinking this is an Austin and
can you give any details or possible age of vehicle. Many thanks. --
Sorry not Austin but another popular UK manufacturer. Registration is
West Riding of Yorkshire CC c1928, so this seems cca
1928 Morris Oxford Light Van modified
to be a Greengrocer Van with old-fashioned cab and fitted with a
radiator blind.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1930 Citroen AC4 Berline
A lovely photo received from Michael

the car in the photograph attached? The man in the black suit is my
maternal great-grandfather John Henry Osborn and the chap on his right
is identified on the back simply as "Jack" who was the owner
of the car. Any help would be appreciated please.
-- A
French car possibly built in Britain because Citroen had opened a
factory in Slough in 1926. Six stud wheels suggesting that this is a

This one shows a cca

ERA R6B Voiturette Racer
Very small photo in my
wife's family albums (UK) believed
put together by her late father; a Major in the
Western Desert in WW2 and connected with the the clandestine Long Range Desert
Group. Lots of tank transporters and Egyptian pyramids, and a postage
stamp photo believed taken at Brooklands.
--
Brooklands motor racing circuit closed in 1939 so photos must be
before. This is a cca

Boitel 3CV Populaire
Photograph received from regular
contributor Joao Ferreira (Portugal)
asking for help in identifying this car on behalf of a
friend. The This
photo is showing the late father-in-law in a mystery car taken probably in Austria during the
fifties. -- We
were unable to identify the car and had marked it UNKNOWN on HP 68.
However we have now been advised by Varun Coutinho that he thinks it is
a
cca 1946'8 Boitel 3CV Populaire, 2-Cyl made 1938'1950 by Automobiles
Boitel - Paris, France. Thanks!

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Unidentified
c1921 Tourer
Very puzzling photo sent to us by Jason
Palmer, Melbourne, (Australia) saying
he recently purchased this
photograph and has not been able to identify the vehicle. Magnifying
the radiator badge shows script name (not clearly) - like a
Coy...?? --
He is not alone. We have sent photo to all our experts and two have
strongly suggested a Wolseley and one has suggested a Crouch. The
radiator does not seem to suit either, but we have nothing better to
offer. Registration is 1921 Salop (Shropshire
CC).
