AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage photo or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1903 Peugeot 18HP
RE Tonneau
Another request for identification of a
vehicles received from our regular contributor Joćo Ferreira (Portugal).
Photo taken in Lisbon, Avenida da Liberdad. Another Peugeot? -- Indeed
another Peugeot. Between 1902 and 1907 Peugeot had some of their models
with the distinctive rectangular header-tank on top of the rad. This is
a big car with a honeycomb rad so is likely to be cca
1903 Peugeot 18HP Rear Entrance Tonneau,
3,635cc four cyl. 89 of these cars were built in 1903.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1904 Peugeot 18HP Double Phaeton
Another request for identification of a
vehicles received from our regular contributor Joćo Ferreira (Portugal).
Photo taken in Cascais of Carlos 1, King of Portugal,
driven by chauffer, Seems Frenchman Albert Beauvalet came to Portugal
1899 to try make Portuguese car but ended representing Peugeot and
taught Royal Family to drive. Carlos
assassinated 1908. -- As
car for a king, probably the bigger cca
1904 Peugeot 18HP Double Phaeton 4
cylinder 3635cc chain drive, (or 12HP).

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1905
Peugeot 68 8HP Double Phaeton
Another photo from our regular contributor Mark
Dawber (New Zealand) from
a request by Tim in Vermont requiring identification of vehicle. -- Lovely
photo with no background to year or location. Numberplate suggests
Rouen, France, pre 1919. The car was made by a pepper mill manufacturer
started 1810 in Sochaux, France. First car, steamer with Serpolet 1889,
petrol in 1890. Now one of worlds biggest car makers. This is a
cca
1905 Peugeot Type 68 8 HP Double Phaeton.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1905 De Dion Bouton 8HP
Another request for identification of a
vehicles received from our regular contributor Joćo Ferreira (Portugal).
Photos possibly taken in Lisbon, Portugal. -- Photos
appear to be glass negatives, or prints thereof, and are exceedingly dark
and unclear; fortunately high resolution so major adjustments to
viewability were possible. Car on the far left is French, made in
Puteaux, Paris, and looks old in appearance to the others. This seems
to be a
cca 1905 De Dion Bouton 8HP Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1907
Daimler 35HP Landaulette
Interesting photo
posted by posted by Eduard Tello on the Jazz Age Vehicle Archive with
the text 'The Ancient Regime Buenos Aires 1913'. Anybody recognize the
car? -- The
car is English and the registration number also seems English. LN is a
London County Council registration of 1907 and the car seems to be a cca
1907 Daimler, - probably a Landaulette,
biggish so probably 30HP or 35HP. Painted rad with an AA badge without
wings is on the scuttle, which is of a pre-1911 pattern.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1907
Chenard & Walcker 14'16HP
Surfing through the internet in
attempting to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs or
postcards of very interesting ancient machinery which has not yet been
identified. This photo was taken in Vienna Austria. -- The
car is French, square edge rad with nuts. Ariejan Bos confirms this is
a Chenard & Walcker. Their main business was manufacture of taxis
for Paris and other capitals. This looks a bit bigger so probably is a
cca 1907 Chenard & Walcker 14'16HP Coupe Limousine.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1909
Motobloc Landaulette
Puzzling photo posted on the AACA
website by Massingnickel (Sweden)
of a car he has not been able to identify. Perhaps Italian? -- No,
this is a French car built in Bordeaux by successors to Schaudel,
forming Motobloc in 1902. Motobloc was one of six entries in 1908 New
York to Paris Race, and featured in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Badge on
rad and distinctive handles on the top of bonnet suggest this is a
cca 1909 Motobloc Landaulette,
probably 14'16 or 18'22 model. Closed in 1930.

Another request for identification of a
vehicles received from our regular contributor Joćo Ferreira (Portugal).
Photos possibly taken in Lisbon, Portugal. -- Photos
appear to be glass negatives, or prints thereof, and are very dark and
unclear; fortunately high resolution so major adjustments to
viewability were possible. White car second from left is French, made in
Paris, with long bonnet and side to mudguards. This would seem a

1909 Renault A1 35CV Chassis
Another request for identification of a
vehicles received from our regular contributor Joćo Ferreira (Portugal).
Photos possibly taken in Lisbon, Portugal.
-- Photos
appear to be glass negatives, or prints thereof. Car chassis second
from left is French from Paris and has a typical Renault bulkhead radiator
and engine. Radiator height compared to the man next to it suggests
this is similar size car to the Landaulette elsewhere on this page
making this cca 1909 Renault A1 35CV chassis.

Another request for identification of a

Possibly
1910 Haynes + Berliet Chassis
Another request for identification of a
vehicles received from our regular contributor Joćo Ferreira (Portugal).
Photos possibly taken in Lisbon, Portugal.
-- Photos
appear to be glass negatives, or prints thereof. We are not too good at
identifying bare chassis but our Ariejan Bos has put forward a couple
of contenders:
The first with radiator (from right) is possibly an American Haynes
from Kokomo, Indiana. The second is possibly a French Berliet, but too
far and vague to be sure.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:c1912 Sizaire & Naudin
Camionette
Another photo from our regular contributor Mark
Dawber (New Zealand) from
a post requiring naming of vehicle. -- Lovely
photo of a relatively unusual car, unless you know it from the very
high exposed transverse front spring and sliding pillar suspension. Car
is French, made in
Paris, by company started in 1903 by the Sizaire brothers, who left
1911, closed 1921. Cars initially single cylinder. Financier D'Ude flag
on logo from 1907. The car is a cca 1912 Sizaire & Naudin
Camionette.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1912
Renault 8CV Fourgonnette
Another photo from our regular contributor Mark
Dawber (New Zealand) from
a post requiring naming of vehicle. -- Nice
French postcard of popular vehicle but with unusual body. The car is French, made in
Paris. This one is the development of a chassis that became the famous
'Taxi De La Marne'. The body was developed of a parcel van for French
PTT and from the formed scuttle to radiator shape this example would
seem to be a coach-built
cca 1912 Renault 8 CV Fourgonnette.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913
Leyland X Type Flatbed Lorry
Another photo from our regular contributor Mark
Dawber (New Zealand) from
a post requiring naming of vehicle. Date maybe 1910s, location
Maraekakaho Station in Hawke's Bay. Truck owner A J Mills, wool branded
as 'Single Battle Axe'. -- Looks
a very British Lorry which seems to
have a circular oval badge and where the radiator is just proud of the
bonnet. After some research it seems this very vehicle still exists and
is a cca
1913 Leyland X Type Lorry, introduced
1906 as bus & lorry.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1925
Rover 16'50 Tourer
Another photo from our regular contributor Mark
Dawber (New Zealand) from
a post requiring naming of vehicle. -- This
seems to be a small hand coloured photograph of relatively low
resulition making identification very difficult. Pointers on car are it
'looks' British, door handles are central, wheelhubs are plated, wheels
seem spoked rater than wire, and unusually the windscreen seems
four-section 'vee-d'. Not many cars have that combination, poss cca
1925 Rover 16'50 Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1928
Austin 7 Gordon England Cup
Lovely family photo from
Bob Denning (UK) taken in
Cornwall. Can we identify the car.-- Registration
seems TU which is Chester commencing 8 so either 1926 or 1928. It has a
body sized exposed rear
spare. Our
Austin Seven racer John Caddy advises probably a GE, a cca
1928 Austin Seven Gordon England Cup Special
Model. England began racing modified Austins 1923, winning Brooklands/many
cups. and went on to build many hundreds fast lightweight 750cc
2-seaters/saloons to 1930.

Viking V8 4.3L Sedan
Another photo from our regular contributor Mark
Dawber (New Zealand) from
a post requiring naming of vehicle. Photo of an impressive pothole
from Far North province of New Zealand. Is the car a Viking? -- Seems
indeed to be a cca
1929 Viking V8 4.3L Sedan. Viking was
a more expensive version of the Oldsmobile built in 1929-30 and was
offered with a myriad of body styles. Little difficult to be sure about
this oine. Over 7,000 Vikings were made 2/4 door open or closed.

Adler 5HP 'Maikafer' Cyclecar
Another photo from our regular contributor Mark

Goliath Pioneer Three-wheeler
Another photo from our regular contributor Mark
Dawber (New Zealand) from
a post requiring naming of vehicle. Pre-WW2 Socitate St, Battavia,
now Jakarta Indonesia. -- Anticipating
some obscure local make I was surprised and pleased with myself to
determine that this vehicle is German from Bremen (inset). 4,000 made
by Borgward 1931 -34. This is a cca
1932 Goliath Pioneer Three-wheeler,
198/247cc two-stroke. 3-seater built with differing bodies, possibly
locally made.

near Rome. What model? -- Looks
Italian registered but is RHD, This is a cca

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
Unknown 1910
Chassis
Another request for identification of a
vehicles received from our regular contributor Joćo Ferreira (Portugal).
Photos possibly taken in Lisbon, Portugal. -- Photos
appear to be glass negatives, or prints thereof. The middle car, with
the radiator is a mystery and even our Ariejan Bos was at a loss as to
what it is ! Appears easy
but nothing definite; some similarity with early Horch, Maurer-Union,
and maybe more. Could be a from parts assembled vehicle. Any
HELP appreciated !

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
Unknown Two
c1910 Chassis
Another request for identification of a
vehicles received from our regular contributor Joćo Ferreira (Portugal).
Photos possibly taken in Lisbon, Portugal. -- Photos
appear to be glass negatives, or prints thereof. We are not too good at
identifying bare chassis
and even our Ariejan Bos has not given us any contenders to the two
chassis. The photos however are lovely and show how basic the the
workshops and repair engineering was ca 15 years into the dawn of
modern motoring.
