:: [ SVVS NATIONAL
AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage photo or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

the make of vehicle? - - The photo is marked'

car was difficult to make out but our Ariejan Bos advises it is an

Lovely photo sent to us by Andrew Lewis-Barned (UK) which
belonged to his great-grandmother, and which is pictured with the

Registration FM (Chester 1914) or FN 589 (Canterbury CBC). Not earlier
than 1906 when bonnet changed from rounded to angular. 10 louvres which
occupy whole bonnet, so a two-cylinder. Earliest a cca

1909 Humber 16HP Landaulette
Another photo, rather pixly, sent to us by Andrew Lewis-Barned (UK) which
belonged to his great-grandmother, and which is pictured with the
chauffeur at Sussex Square London. Can we help to identify the car?
-- Not A Rolls as these have a full width rad top. The car is British,
no registration visible to help dating, but front and rear wheel hubs
as well as the sloping thinner very top of rad advise this is a cca
1909 Humber 16HP Landaulette, made in
Coventry. Originally bicycles, first car 1896.

1910 Packard Model 18 Touring
Cinema screen grab taken from an American documentary film
"Horizons Unlimited" made in 1948 about the American roads
made for the Highway Transportation where cars are being investigated
by IMCDB. - - Dark and blurry so looks a round
radiator, but is not. This is a
cca 1910'11 Packard Model 18 Touring
from mudguard 'hoods' and large wheel hubs. Height of front door is
slightly lower than rear door suggesting 1910/19 11 model. Next model
all doors were same height.

with- all suggesting approximately

1914 Enfield-Alldays Nimble Nine
Another interesting photo received from a forum of old photos
and asking for information on the make of vehicle owned by GGrandmother

the bonnet. Bullnose rad suggested Bullnose Morris but they had louvres
in the bonnet. Relatively sure it is a cca

1915 Delahaye 16'20 Camionette
Lovely photo sent to us by our old friend Fer Cools (Holland)

personnel. - - The immediate identification
feature of holes in the radiator skirting was familiar, but needed our
Ariejan Bos to the rescue advising a French Delahaye. Specific dating
feature was that the rad edges were rounded rather than square, which
suggests this is a cca
1915 Delahaye 16'20 Camionette.
Delahaye subsequently also made many fire engines

make, different models, French
SLIM 1920-25 type AP Tourer made to
1923 as 12HP & 15HP models, similar larger models were made 1924'5
in three sizes before closure. This one would probably be earlier
pre-front brakes model, possibly the 12HP Tourer.

|

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1925 FN 1300 Sport
Another puzzling photo from France received from
Georges Truffaut (Belgium).
Can we tell brand? -- Work on the photo
eventually noted that there is a flying bird logo on the radiator face.
Interesting Germanic one-above-other lighting layout but does also have
sidelights on mudguards, and has a four-part windscreen. Big wheels for
small car? Ariejan Bos eventually advised this is a cca
1925 Belgian FN 1300 Sports, also made
in 1400 and 1625 forms to 1933. Third 1925 Monte.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1927 Minerva AK Rebodied
Hand painted photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of car photos asking for informationon the
make of vehicle? Suggestions of it is a Vauxhall or a Railton. A big
Minerva? - - Would agree it being a Belgian
Minerva, and as the body style is
quite modern, probably a later re-body. Post-1930 Minervas went for
flaps rather than louvres. Minerva was effectively gone by 1934. This
would be from the bigger cars of A group which have 22 louvres,
Probably the 6 litre AK.

Grainy photo from a forum of old photos asking for information
on the make of vehicle owned by late father in late 40's and mid 50's.
- -Vehicle seems to have reg TJ 8377 issued
by Lancaster County Council in 1934. The car has a triangular radiator
header and a triangular badge area with considerable heritage. This is

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1937
Plymouth Sedan
Grainy photo from a forum of old photos asking for information
on the make of vehicle owned by late father in late 40's and mid 50's.
- - Car is American, headlamps attached to
side of bonnet. Waterfall grille, quite common on US cars in the 1930s.
Only part of the registration visible but not of much help. Rad-top
figure however suggests this is from economical end of the Chrysler
Corporation products, a cca
1937 Plymouth Sedan or Coupe but not
enough visible to be certain of model.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1940 Skoda 1100 Popular Drophead
Another puzzling photo received from Chris
de Boer (Holland)
who is a Historian on World War II events and who asked again for help
in identifying a vehicle used by the German army May 1945.
- - Very difficult as people and clothes are obscured car, so we tried

1976 Mobra 50 Super Motorcycle
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK),
whose son married a Romanian girl from Transylvania, has just holidayed
there, where Tony, an old biker, asked if we knew what this was?. -
- From the tank this looks like a cca
1976 Mobra 50 Super, made by Moped
Brasov, Mo-Bra, making motorcycles in Zarnesti between 1970-1994 as
follow-on to the 1960s Carpati moped. All Mobra were 50cc (max in

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
Unidentified
1920 Three-wheeler
Hand painted photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of car photos asking for information.
Various names discarded; Morgan, BSA etc. - - Old
car considerably rebuilt and re-registered in Bournemouth in 1920. My
feeling is that this could be a British cca 1912 Crouch Carette, water
cooled, whereas our Veterans expert Ariejan Bos thinks, and could be
right, this is a modified Auto
Carrier company's Sociable, air
cooled. AC later went to build the AC Cobra. READ
