:: [ SVVS NATIONAL
AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1895 Duryea Motor Wagon
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK)
seems to be on the lookout for unusual cars, and wondered if we knew what
this one was? Photo from Romanian
flea market ! --
Very early car which was an attraction at the Barnum & Bailey
Circus touring America and would have been the first 'horseless carriage'
many people would have seen. Photographed in York in 1896 on Penn
Common. This is a
cca 1895 Duryea Motor Wagon 4HP. The
Duryea Brothers built their first car 1893 in Springfield, Mass.

Napier 16HP Tonneau
Very interesting period photo received from
our regular contributor Tom Cosens, Yorkshire, (UK)
asking if we could help with this one which he thinks is a French
Panhard et Levassor. --
This one started a lively debate amongst
our experts. It looked to me much like a Star but our specialists
doubted it. Ariejan Bos suggests from the details of the visible
rear breaking system that this is probably a British cca
1903 Napier 16HP Tonneau, similar to
one on our previous Help Page HP133.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1903 Gladiator Tonneau
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) found this photo on facebook, thought it was a Panhard
& Levassor but wondered what model this one was. --
Our veterans expert Ariejan Bos
advises this is a French cca
1903 Gladiator Tonneau, probably 12HP,
made in by Clement Gladiator. Known make in England but the photo has
an embossing which suggests Tibbitt (?) Wellington, suggesting New
Zealand. UK 'W' registration was Sheffield, although there is a
Wellington in Somerset.

Earlier photo received from Ged Moss (UK)
of his G.Grandfather's 1905 Star. G. was the Managing Director of
Rotherham Forge & Rolling Mills. Ged has subsequently found other
photos of early cars but he has no idea of what they were. --
Very pixly contact-strip photo,
which we tried to improve, of only the very front of the car but the
bonnet is indicative of a
cca 1904 Humber Humberette 5 HP
Two-Seater.
Humberettes came 1903 to 1912, 5, 6.5, 7.5HP single, - to 8.7HP twins.

Daimler 28HP Tonneau
Earlier photo received from Ged Moss (UK)
of his G.Grandfather's 1905 Star. G. was the Managing Director of

From another row of cars where only the
fist one has enough detail to work on; and a very impressive one to
look at. This is a cca

Arms (BSA).

Margaret Kearns of Goulburn, (Australia)
which was labeled "Miss Faithfull's car", owned by Florence
E. M. Faithfull (1899-1992) daughter of owners of sheep-grazing
Springfield Station, near Goulburn. --
I thought possibly French Mors because of
apparent bonnet crease but this is only a 'wave'. Ariejan Bos suggests
from the distinctive wheel hubs the car is Belgian prestige cca
1908 Minerva Limousine-Landaulette,
likely the type 'M'.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1909 Bianchi 20'30 Roi de Belges
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) found this photo on Ebay and has been researching it. Looks
a 1914 photoshop exercise! Babies on a German car ? --
Interesting
photo of a lovely big car full of children and babies. Closer scrutiny
suggests all 'children' appear to be the same girl at different ages,
possibly the photographer's daughter? Car is not German but is Italian,
being a cca
1909 Bianchi 20'30 Roi de Belges. Slightly
later cars had bluish not white coloured radiator badge.

We asked our veterans expert Ariejan Bos
who advises, rare indeed, an American cca 1911 Reading Model 40

Another from a number of interesting
period photos sent by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please identify vehicle on a Southport or
Bradford postcard; registration AK 2226 ?--
Reg is Bradford. Initial gut feeling, a Humber, but wrong large high
radiator with starting handle touching the rad, no forward tie rod, the
American style demountable wheels, rounded type bulkhead etc. Bedford
Buick? Our Ariejan Bos confirmed American but cca
1913 Mitchell, probably 5-4

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1914 Reo The Fifth Tourer
Surfing through the internet in attempting to
identify old vehicles we often come across photographs on websites
where they are asking for identification or have wrongly identified, so
we have a go !
--
In this case it was suggested it could be
a 1914 Oldsmobile or 1929s Durant. Part of the reason is that the photo
was very grained and bad, so we first repaired it. This shows that the
radiator top has an overhang, and it has coned hubcaps, which point it
to being a cca
1914 Reo The Fifth Tur.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1914

Intriguing period photo received from John
Kennedy (UK)
saying he is involved in a family history project and has two
photographs of the front and back of a car that was involved in a road
accident in 1937. Can we advise the make and model?
-- American
car also assembled in UK, so if photo taken in UK, car may have been
made in the UK. Car is cca

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1940 Hudscon Model 41
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK)
seems to be on the lookout for unusual cars, and wondered if we knew what
this one was? Photo found on the net.
Possibly taken in 1951? --
Photo is entitled First police officer in Norway. Bit of further
detective work suggests this is not in Scandinavia but Norway in
Oxford, not far from China, Milan, Lebanon, Poland, Sweden, Paris and
Belgrade. Confusing? Car is not ; a cca

difficult from photo to see exactly which body.

this one was? Found on an old French

Rectangular configuration to axles with plunger suspension, and no visible
rear wheel, suggests Morgan; but as it is in France it is a licensed cca
