:: [ SVVS NATIONAL
AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage photo or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1906
Rambler 20 HP Surrey, Type 1
Another interesting photograph found while
surfing the web researching unknown machinery. Westbrook Historical
Society wanted to know make?
-- Lovely
photo of an early US car from Kenosha, Wisconsin made by English-born
Thomas B. Jeffery who entered the car business in 1897 and started mass
producing. In 1902 he was second largest US manufacturer after
Oldsmobile. Recognizable by circular bonnet top with louvres, this is
cca 1905 Rambler 20 HP Surrey, Type 1.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1907
Argyll 10'12 Landaulette
Postcard received from Robert Ryan (UK)
who is investigating the car shown, and wondered if it was an Arrol
Johnston? -- Postcard
is of Helensburgh, a small town NW of Glasgow, Scotland. Arrol Johnston
is a Scottish car made in Paisley, but this is not one of them.
Registration letter V was issued by Lanark CC, south of
Glasgow/Edinburgh but the car was made nearby Helensburg in Alexandria.
Not a clear photo but this would seem to be a
cca 1907 Argyll 10'12 Open-drive Landaulette.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Probably 1907
Scout Tourer
Batch of lovely photos received from Graham
Kay (UK) from
his late grandmother's estate. From
his knowledge this very old car was one of their first cars at Crowle
in Lincolnshire, guess around 1905. --
U 63# is a Leeds CBC registration of cca 1907, so relatively local. The
car was a puzzle but advised by our Dutch veterans expert Ariejan Bos
that this could be a British Salisbury Wiltshire built cca
1907 Scout Tourer, possibly the 25HP
six cylinder TT. 1500 cars were made to closure 1921.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Possibly
c 1908 Itala Tourer
Another interesting
photo received from Mike Statham
(UK) part
of the Research Team at the Friends of Insole Court, formerly Ely
Court, Llandaff. These are O' Callaghan cars taken at Swords, Co. Dublin, Ireland.
-- This
is same car as below but this time pulling a plow!! Note rope/chain
round rear wheel. Cars were frequently used for plowing. Photo is
not much help as does not show front of car.
Itala would have been well known just
then as being winner of the Peking to Paris race.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Possibly
c 1908 Itala Tourer
Another interesting
enquiry received from Mike Statham
(UK) part
of the Research Team at the Friends of Insole Court, formerly Ely
Court, Llandaff, near Cardiff. These are O' Callaghan cars taken
outside Cremona House, Swords, Co. Dublin, Ireland. Is this a White
Steamer?
-- Not
a White, but doubt as to what it is. Best guess from rear brake bracket
by our Dutch veterans expert Ariejan Bos is that this could be an
Italian made cca
1908'9 Itala Tourer, as in winner of
Peking to Paris.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913
Metallurgique 20'40 Special
Another interesting
enquiry received from Mike Statham
(UK) part
of the Research Team at the Friends of Insole Court, formerly Ely
Court, Llandaff, near Cardiff. These are O' Callaghan cars taken
outside Cremona House, Swords, Co. Dublin, Ireland. Military car?
--
Damaged photo which we have repaired. No numberplate visible. Could
well be the same car as below but re-worked during WW1 for military
service. Same age lights so is probably a
cca 1913 Metallurgique 20'40
Special.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913
Metallurgique 20'40 Tourer
Another interesting
enquiry received from Mike Statham
(UK) part
of the Research Team at the Friends of Insole Court, formerly Ely
Court, Llandaff, near Cardiff. These are O' Callaghan cars taken
outside Cremona House, Swords, Co. Dublin, Ireland.
--
No numberplate visible but the AA sign is post 1911. These two photos
seem to be of the same car with hood up/down. The car is Belgian, made
in Charleroi by locomotive/rail company, and is a cca
1913 Metallurgique 20'40 Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1914
Calthorpe 10'12 Minor Two-seater
Another interesting
enquiry received from Mike Statham
(UK) part
of the Research Team at the Friends of Insole Court, formerly Ely
Court, Llandaff, near Cardiff. These are O' Callaghan cars taken
outside Cremona House, Swords, Co. Dublin, Ireland.
A Baby Peugeot perhaps? --
No, this is not French but British.
Identifying feature is two sets of bonnet louvres with a gap/handle in
the middle. Made in Birmingham it is a cca
1914 Calthorpe 10'12 Minor Two-seater.
Closed 1914 and 1925.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1917
Rover 12 Drophead Coupe
Batch of lovely photos received from Graham
Kay (UK) from
his late grandmother's estate and
taken in or around Doncaster and Sheffield. This picture
show a registration LR 5###. --
LR is a London County Council registration of cca 1917. The car is a
rather pretty Doctor's Coupe which was a development on the Owen Clegg
designed Rover 12 introduced 1911, and which continued in
production after WW2 with mods until 1924. This is a pre WW1 cca
1917 Rover 12 Drophead Coupe.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1922
Morris Cowley Two-seater
Batch of lovely photos received from Graham
Kay (UK) from
his late grandmother's estate and
taken in or around Doncaster and Sheffield. This picture show a
registration WA 7363 and would have been taken around 1930. From your
website identified as Morris
Cowley Bullnose?--
WA is a Sheffield CBC registration c 1922. The
three lamp set makes it as a Cowley, as does one-piece
windscreen and passenger's door only. Therefore this is indeed a cca
1922 Morris Cowley Two-seater & Dickey.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1925
Minerva AC Tourer
Batch of lovely photos received from Graham
Kay (UK) from
his late grandmother's estate and
taken in or around Doncaster and Sheffield. It is not showing a
registration, but would have been taken around 1930. --
This is a rather magnificent car built in Berchem, Antwerp, Belgium,
whose early UK representative was Charles Rolls. Cars are of
Rolls-Royce quality and this one is a neat cca
1925 Minerva All-weather AC Tourer,
probably the six cylinder Knight sleeve-valve engined 30 CV.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1928
Horch 8 Type 305 Cabriolet
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify the vehicle
posted on the internet and wanted to know make, year and model. --
Obviously a good year for very strong headlamps as expected from a
quality German car by August Horch. This is an ancestor of the modern Audi, via Auto
Union, Audi being Latin for Horch (listen). This is a cca 1928 Horch 8
Cabriolet, from the radiator details probably
type 305, 3378cc eight
cylinder 65PS, made between 1927-8.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1928
Indian X4 Roadster
Photo from our Publicity Officer Tony
Russell (UK) wondering
what it was? --
Immediate thought was American Austin or the later American Bentham,
with which photo has actually a design connection. This is a prototype
car, normally not our specialty, made by the American motorcycle
manufacturer 'Indian' whose bikes were becoming as expensive as a Model
T. This is a cca
1928 Indian X4 Roadster, last of four
experimental cars. Depression killed car and new car division sold.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1929 Vauxhall
25'70
Laundaulette
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify the vehicle
posted on the internet and wanted to know make, year and model. --
No background on the photo, but the mummy's head is Egyptian, the car
is British but the numberplate, which seems to be IE, was Irish from
County Claire in the south-east of now Eire. Regretfully no dating data
available. We thought that car having large louveres was cca 1929 Vauxhall 20'60
Laundaulette, but NOW please
see HP 142 .
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1929
Marmon Roosevelt Sedan
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify the vehicle
posted on the internet and wanted to know make, year and model. --
Very difficult one but badge on the radiator seemed to have a human
face type logo. Very few have that. One which did have a face for a
short while was the Marmon Motor Co of Indianapolis who made the cca
1929 Roosevelt 4-Door Sedan 1929/30.
Named after President Theodore Roosevelt. Marmon were in Indianapolis
from 1851 to 1933.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1931
Rover Meteor 20 HP Saloon
Batch of lovely photos received from Graham
Kay (UK) from
his late grandmother's estate and
taken in or around Doncaster and Sheffield. These pictures show
a registration WE7941 and would have been taken around 1930 judging
from the boy who is his father born in Dec 1923. --
WE is a Sheffield CBC registration. Couple of identification features,
the notch at the base of upper part of rad and the roundel on the badge
bar, indicate this is a cca
1931 Rover Meteor 20 HP Coach-built Saloon.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1938
Vauxhall GL 25hp Limousine
Another puzzling photo received from James
Baxendale (UK) of cars belonging to his
family. Photo taken June 1941. Mother has written on the back that it
was a Daimler, but may not be case as there have been some mis-identifications!).
--
And this is indeed another. Not a Daimler. Identification features are
the back-end of the bonnet louvres and the back-end of the 'flutes' by
the windscreen. Flutes identify it as a Vauxhall and the louvres as the
cca
1938 Vauxhall GL 25hp Limousine.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1938
Triumph 14'60 Vitesse Saloon
Very blurry grainy photo received from
Carlton Lomax (UK)
taken in 1960s with him in front of the car as the little boy
with his mother. -- Registration
unclear; FVT Stoke on Trent, FYT is London, both c1938/9. Car was British,
from Coventry by UK largest
manufacturer of motorcycles, Triumph. Confusing range of cars in-period;
this has two sets of 3 louvers, recently advised by Graham Shipman of
the Pre-1940 Triumph Motor Club that it is a cca
1938 Triumph 14/60 Vitesse Saloon.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1945 Austin 8 AP Tourer
interesting
photo received from Dene Staples, Perth
(Australia) taken
in mid 1950s with him in front of the car he would like to identify. It
had a canvas roof which leaked in rain because of holes, two doors and
flaps on the doors for making signals. -- Popular
British saloon/tourer but was probably bodied in Australia just
after WW2. Twin windscreen-top mounted wipers. This is a cca
1945 Austin 8 AP Tourer. Launched UK
1939, continued to be made in OZ to 1948. Total of 103,585 all 8s made.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:c1948
Citroen 11BL Legere
Cinema screen grab taken from aPolish
film "Kamienie na szaniec" (Stones for the Rampart) from
20142 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. The film is
about a Polish partisan group Gray Ranks during the Nazi
occupation of Warsaw in WW2. --
...when Citroen were actually not making cars so this would have
needed to have been pre 1940. Car is however post war cca 1948
Citroen Traction, probably a 11BL Legere, with non-period orange
flashing indicators on roof sides. |
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1954
Fiat 1100/103 Saloon
Another interesting
photo received from Giorgio Tardi (Italy)
who took it at Madeira airport and
wandered as to model and year?
-- This
is an Italian car that was also built around the world in a number of
countries. Therefore a little difficult to be sure on exact origin but
this is pre-SEAT and so we think this one was built in Italy and is a cca 1954 Fiat
1100/103.
Three outer bar grille and colourscheme suggests posher Tippo
B. It seems to have pre 1992 Portuguese
number plate.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:c1960
Shirley Mk2 Sports
Photo from our Publicity Officer Tony
Russell (UK) who
is a Ford specials and hotrods fan. --
Not our specialty; keeping up with over 2.5 million models from
mainstream car manufacturers is difficult enough without going into the
realms of obscurish Ford one/two off specials. Registration is Isle of
Bute in Scotland, so an age-related plate. Nearest we had was photo of
identical car with another similar CSJ registration named 'Ford
Model Y special'. This is c1960
Shirley Mk2 Sports, 1172cc.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:c1960 Skoda Octavia Super
Saloon
One of number of interesting photos sent
to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia)
who is collector of old photos. Can we identify cars taken somewhere in
Czechoslovakia in 1960s-1970s? --
Reg not discernable and no name to
hotel, so cannot help on location. Car is indeed another
Skoda; full oval front with horizontal badged bar and vertical grilles
makes this a cca 1960 Skoda Octavia Super
Saloon, two-door model 993,
four cylinder 1221cc, 115 kph, made 1959 - 1961.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:c1964
Skoda 1202 Station Wagon
One of number of interesting photos sent
to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia)
who is collector of old photos. Can we identify cars taken somewhere in
Czechoslovakia in 1960s-1970s? --
Reg seems Hutna Hora, so car
was likely to have been a Skoda and indeed it was; this model was made
between 1961 and 1973 with very little change, so likely a cca
1964 Skoda 1202 STW Standart Station Wagon.
They had one door on driver's side and two on the passenger; deluxe had
a stripe.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:UNKNOWN
c1959 Troleybus
Another interesting photo sent
to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia)
who is collector of old photos. Can we identify the trolleybus and
country the photo had been taken in? --
Regret this is not within our knowledge. We note that the Policemen is
in white uniform and wearing a custodian UK type summer white helmet.
Cars in background do not suggest UK, so is perhaps Italy, Polizia
Municipale, and vehicle perhaps an Alfa Romeo-Aerfer-OCREN, or a Fiat,
or a French Vetra?
