:: [ SVVS NATIONAL
AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage photo or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

Wolseley 10HP Van
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify vehicle
posted on a
Facebook Page which
was asking for identification.
-- Mark was
concerned that the radiatior did not go round the bonnet, but we think
this was the way the photo was taken. From lenghth of bonnet this
definitely seems to be a cca
1903 Wolseley Delivery Van made for
the Royal Mail. The 10 HP and the 20HP were very similar in appearance.
They did also make a 6HP with an enormous box van body.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1907
Lanchester 28HP Limousine
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK)
seems to be on the lookout for unusual cars, and wondered if we knew
what this one was? Found in a box of old photos. -- Relatively
unusual bodywork arrangement so is quite easy to identify as a
Lanchester, 1899-1931. Lanchesters were unique in design and concept.
This one has tiller steering, mid engine and body section before the
rear door so is a cca
1907 Lanchester 28HP Open Drive Limousine.
Lanchester was bought by BSA/Daimler 1931.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:c1907
Daimler Tourer
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify vehicle
posted on a
Facebook Page which
was asking for identification.
-- Not as easy as it looks although clearly
an 'English Daimler'. Quite a contradictory car: steering column angle
dates the car at 1906, smallish ca, flat un-edged mudguards, no radiator louvres, 12
spoke wheels, not chain-drive, no long brake lever; so a couple of our
experts agree this is a cca
1907 Daimler Tourer, poss 28HP
transition / export model?

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1907
Daimler & 1907 Minerva
Surfing through the internet in
attempting to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs of
very interesting old machinery which has not been identified there.. --
Further research uncovered that this
accident seems to have occurred in
1912 but not much else. The car on the
right was Belgian but widely available in the UK; a cca 1907 Minerva
Model M Landaulette. The car on the left is more difficult but fins on
the rad and shortish body say a cca 1909 Daimler Landaulette, poss
28HP.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1909
Laurin & Klement GR4 Tourer
Cinema screen grab taken from a Czech film "Dobrý
voják Svejk" (Good Soldier Svejk) made 1957 where cars are being
investigated by IMCDB. Soldier Svejk talks about the assassination of
Archduke Ferdinand. -- Assassination
occurred in 1914 when headlamps were acetylene not electric!
Made by the then biggest car manufacturer
in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in Mlada Boleslav. I visited factory
many times in the 1960s. This is a cca 1909 Laurin & Klement
Typ G Tourer, is now Skoda!

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1910
Dennis Landaulette
Photo appeared in a Chanel 5 Documentary of
Agatha Christi's car who really disappeared in 1926 for number of days
abandoning her running car near a cliff following her divorce and death
of her mother. Her car was a Morris Cowley, which this plainly is
not!
-- There
are no pictures at all of Agatha Christies c1925 Morris Cowley Bullnose
Four Seater although a number of look-a-likes are variously shown, and
no correct registration is known. This is a 'police car', a c1910
Dennis Landaulette.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1911
Renault Open Drive Landaulette
Cinema screen grab taken from an American film "Get
your Man" made in 1927 n where cars are being investigated by
IMCDB. Silent movie about an American girl who falls in love with a nobleman
in Paris who is about to get married. --
The car is full of contradictions; an
older landaulette being used as a Taxi, a Taxameter beside the
driver. The car is a cca
1911 Renault Landaulette which had
subsequently
been updated with wire wheels, rounded mudguards
and electric headlights.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1911
National Steam Car Co Omnibus
Lovely winter photo from a Russian poster
in Cyrillic suggesting 1919 Trafalgar Square London and showing two
very interesting vehicle so far not identified there.
-- F
4461 is Essex CC Registration, 1911. Vehicle
on right is very interesting being a paraffin fuelled steam carriage
with thimble tube boilers, built by Thomas Clarkson, previously of
C&C Steam Car Syndicate, and operated from 1909 by National
Steam Car Co in competition with LGOC
in the London area, culminating 1919 with 184.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:c1913
Charron 25HP Landaulette
Unusual Photo posted on a Facebook
page of
very interesting old machinery which has not yet been identified
there; "Taxi in Essex"..
-- H reg
is Essex but this is LH which is London CC 1913. The vehicle is French Paris
made by a British owned company Charron Ltd, successors to CGV. Charron
made 'X' 12hp Taxis for London. From the Taxameter this is being used
as a taxi, it is one of their bigger cars and is probably the c1913
Charron 25HP landaulette. Charron ceased production 1930.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1912
Charron 12HP Landaulette Taxi
Lovely winter photo from a Russian poster
in Cyrillic suggesting 1919 Trafalgar Square London and showing two
very interesting vehicle so far not identified there.
-- The
vehicle on the left is very similar to one in photo below and has a
registration number that is only a few hundred before it. This is also
a LH registration whiuch is London CC cca 1912 and this ia also a Taxi,
- as is the car in the middle behind it. Paris made for UK owning
company, this is a cca
1913
Charron 12HP Landaulette Taxi.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:c1915
Ford T & c1924 Citroen C
Unusual Photo published on a New
Zealand Facebook
page of
very interesting old machinery which has not yet been identified there.
-- Accident seems to have
occurred in Christchurch
in 1925. No fatalities but one severely
injured person and two badly damaged cars. Car on the left is an
American cca 1915 Model T Ford as has angular bonnet and electric
lights. Car on right is the French cca 1924 Citroen Model C Tourer as
still has flat mudguards. American 1924 Dodge at back.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:cca
1921 Packard Single Six
Our venerable
Hon Treasurer Toby Oakes (UK)
has just commenced his 80th year and yet still continues working as the
Principal Partner of his accountancy practice. He received this
Birthday Card and discussion ensued as to what the car was. He thought
probably a Bitser?.
-- Although it
does look a 'cut-down' car,- from the radiator, filler cap, and
headlamps our American experts confirm it is a cca
1921 Packard Single Six Raceabout,
Bonnet and scuttle are custom as is the two-seat body.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
c1923 De Dion Bouton IW Landaulette
Unusual photo posted on a Facebook
page of
very interesting old machinery which has not yet been identified
there; Possibly a Minerva or a Rochet Schneider? -- Some
discussion about this one by various people with Rochet Schneider being
a possibility.
I however am
relatively sure that this is indeed French but that it is a
cca 1923 De
Dion Bouton IW Landaulette. D-D-B made the 'IS' Taxi, but this is a IW
bigger Landaulette which, from the Taxameter, is being used as a taxi.

AND DATING:1923
Cluley 11.5HP Four-Seater
Unusual Photo published on a New
Zealand Facebook page of
very interesting old machinery which has not yet been identified there.
-- Fire
apparently occured in Christchurch in 1926. "It suddenly burst
into flames while the owner was paying a call". Badge must have
melted off but just a trace of a logo on the radiator. Quite a small
British car of which only about 2000 in total were ever made so
interesting one was in NZ. This is the bigger
cca 1923 Cluley 11.5HP Two-door Four-Seater.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1924
Leyland SG Type
Unusual photo posted on a Facebook
page of
very interesting old machinery which has not yet been identified
there, although the lorry could be a Leyland.-- Leyland
indeed and next to a sphinx head petrol pump which we have had before
on HP142
. WT 7267
registration is West Riding of Yorkshire 1924. The vehicle is cca
1924 Leyland SG Type, chassis similar
to that used on SG7 busses. Bit of research locates the photo to Alfred
Brittain, York Rd, Kings Cross, London, not now there.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1924
Vauxhall 30'98 Tourer
Unusual photo posted by Pedro de Melo (Portugal?)
on Facebook
page of
very interesting old machinery which has not yet been identified there.
-- This is
one of a number of sporting cars parked in a row and entitled
'Competition'. This one is particularly interesting as it is quite a
big tall car and it is British. It was first British production car to
top 100 mph,, this is a cca
1924 Vauxhall 30'98 Tourer, probably
the more powerful OE Type fitted with a 4,224 four cylinder OHV 115 bhp
engine.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1923
Lancia Lambda Torpedo
Unusual photo posted by Pedro de Melo (Portugal?)
on Facebook
page of
very interesting old machinery which has not been identified there.
-- This is
one of a number of sporting cars parked in a row and entitled
'Competition'. This one is particularly interesting as it has high
mounted headlights just above the top of the rad, a feature of the
Italian Lancia built in Turin. This is a cca
1923 Lancia Lambda, probably the
Series 2 car, made 1923 to 1924, which had a 49 HP 2121 cc
V 4
engine.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1924
Delage DE Tourer
Unusual photo posted by Pedro de Melo (Portugal?)
on Facebook
page of
very interesting old machinery which has not yet been identified there.
-- This is
one of a number of sporting cars parked in a row and entitled
'Competition'. This one looks a little less sporty than the others and
is French, made in Paris. It is however a very competitive make in
Grand Prix races. As it has a relatively tall narrow radiator this is cca
1924 Delage DE Tourer, with
probably the 2117cc four cylinder engine.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1925
Bignan Supersport
Unusual photo posted by Pedro de Melo (Portugal?)
on Facebook
page of very interesting old machinery which has not been identified there.
-- This is
one of a number of sporting cars parked in a row and entitled
'Competition'. This one is particularly interesting as it has a very
unusual radiator with the water filler cap protruding well forward of
the front of the rad. Made in Curbevoie, Paris, this is a cca 1925
Bignan Supersport with 2L 16 valve engine. Won the Monte Carlo Rally in
1924.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1925
Renault NN Camionette
Cinema screen grab taken from an American film "Get your
Man" made in 1927 n where cars are being investigated by IMCDB.
Silent movie about an American girl who falls in love with a nobleman
in Paris who is about to get married. --
Probably stock library footage of the
1920s Place de la Concorde which is at the eastern end of the
Champs-Elysees in Paris and is town's largest square. Very indistict
vehicle but sloping coal scuttle bonnet suggests is a cca
1925 Renault NN 6 CV Camionette.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1925
Renault 40 Phaeton Transform.
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify vehicle
posted on a
Facebook Page asking for identification. Mark
thought perhaps a big Renault? --
Big Renault indeed; shame no view of front. This is from the era before
frontal louvers and frontal radiators were introduced because big
scuttle louvres can just be seen through the spare wheel. This is
Renault's flagship, a cca
1925 Renault Model 40 Phaeton Transformable
possibly by Kellner (called Model 45 for export).

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1929
Armstrong Siddeley 12'6 Saloons
In attempting to identify a
Porthos car came across photo of four white cars with kangaroos on rad
and names on bonnets of Porthos, Athos, D'Artagnan and Aramis. --
Further research uncovered details on the Daily Telegraph (UK)
website that the photo refers to the Ashes Tour of England May 1930
when the Australian team was provided with a fleet of cars named after
the Three Musketeers. The cars have a Coventr BC registration of
1929 and are cca 1929 Armstrong Siddeley 12'6 Saloons,

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1955
Dannenhauer & Stauss Cabriolet
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell
(UK) seems to be on the lookout for
unusual cars, and wondered if we knew what this one was seen by a
friend -- Apparently
rarer than the Porsche 356 that it mimics. This is a cca
1955 Dannenhauer & Stauss Cabriolet,
about 135 built in Stuttgart Germany 1951-57, based on Porsche looks
but Volkswagen Beetle underpinnings and engine (0>60, 36 seconds!). Noticeable
are Volks wheels, suicide doors and split screen. However had four
seats. 18 left.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1970
Mercedes Benz O Bus
One of number of interesting photos
sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia)
who is collector of old photos. Can we identify the vehicl, year, and
location. -- We
are not very good at non-UK busses but
think from cca
1970 Mercedes Benz O series of rear
engined busses, possibly an O 302. Also cannot help with location as
the plaques on the building are unreadable. People no jackets and
building air-conditioned. Busses also made in Argentina and Brazil, so
perhaps from over there?
