:: [ SVVS NATIONAL
AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage photo or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1873 Aveling & Porter 8 Ton Roller
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) asking for identification of a steam engine with
conical front roller. -- Name
"Invicta" is on the front pillar which was the County of Kent
insignia, first used by Hengis and Horsa in 499AD, advising this was a cca
1873 Aveling & Porter 8 Ton Steam roller. Erroneously
thought in 1871 that the conical split rollers semi-skidding action
would assist the ramming down of road stone. Rollers were in use in
Trinidad in 1950s.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Probably
cca 1901 Falke Voiturettte
Another interesting photo received from our
regular contributor Par Sorliden (Sweden)
from a postcard and would welcome any suggestions as to what it was. --
Early type of Voiturette of the Decauville
pattern, which our Veterans Expert Ariejan Bos is relatively sure is a
Falke from Mönchen-Gladbach, Germany.
Started with bicycles in 1899, cars 1900 with their own 4HP engine.
Ariejan feels this is later poss 1901 as has an angled steering column.
Later Cars with proprietary engines to 1908.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1903 Brooke 14HP Tonneau
Lovely photo from Derek Appleton (UK) from
a plate glass negative taken by grandfather of vintage cars in
Leatherhead late 1920. early 1930s. rateful for identification of the
cars and any indication of the event recorded. - Cars
have no obvious numberplates so doubting dating 1920/30s, more like
1903/4, on a Reliability Trial. Our Ariejan Bos advises first car is
very unusual c
1903 Brooke 14HP RE Tonneau on the
1903 1000 miles Reliability Trial from London to 6 towns in 6 days.

1903 Daimler 14HP Tonneau
Lovely photo from Derek Appleton (UK) from
a plate glass negative taken by grandfather of vintage cars in
Leatherhead late 1920. early 1930s. rateful for identification of the
cars and any indication of the event recorded. - Cars
have no obvious numberplates so doubting dating 1920/30s, more like
1903/4. Second car difficult to see but could have side mounted water
headers so could be a cca1903

miles Reliability Trial of 6 towns in 6 days.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1904
Megali Deckert Racer
Interesting response to Unknown Motorcycle bottom on Help Page 177,
from Leon Mitchell of Adelaide (Australia)
of Amerigo at a velodrome-. - Leon advises that
unusual gear/chain drive was a feature of Magali motorcycles, made at
10 Rue Danton, Levallois, France. Road-going Magalis had a case around
the gear drive, and used mostly Buchet singles and twins. Amerigo's
c1904 racer used an uncommon engine built by Deckert & Cie.
Attached photo of Thomas on a
Magali-Deckert.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
Possibly cca
1904 Rochet & Schneider
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for
identification. --
No background apart from that it is
apostcard of an early car in France. Bouches-du-Rhone is an area round
Marseilles on the Mediterranean as confirmed by numberplate. Despite an
obvious fan bolt through the rad we have not been able to identify
make. Ariejan Bos confirmed knowing the photo, but remains a
mystery. Possibly an early
cca 1904 Rochet & Schneider?

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1907
Renault Fourgon
Cinema screen grab taken from a French film "Thomas
l'imposteur" (Thomas, the Imposter made in 1965 where cars are
being investigated by IMCDB. Film is set in First World War when Paris
is about to fall to the Germans, and convoy of cars tries to evacuate
the wounded. -- Very
blurry picture which suggests a commercial vehicle with a very short
coal scuttle bonnet suggesting this is one of the earliest Renault
commercials, a cca
1907 Renault Fourgon delivery van.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1907
Delaunay Bellville 15HP Town Car
Cinema screen grab from French film "Thomas l'imposteur"
made in 1965 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Film is set in
First World War when Paris is about to fall to the Germans, and convoy
of cars to evacuate wounded. -- Blurry
picture of a car with very high set lights and radiator is circular
with eccentric border, wider at bottom, which limits makes. The bonnet
has no corrugations and parallel up to screen suggesting this is cca
1907 Delaunay Bellville 15HP Town Car.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1909
Hotchkiss X6 Limousine
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos. Hotchkiss? --
Indeed Hotckiss. American family of
British extraction who built an arms factory in France for Napoleon lll,
having been major supplier to the Union Army in US Civil War.
Subsequent recapitalisation resulted in additional factory in London.
Cannons and cylinder blocks same process so big cars 1904, copies
Mercedes. From louvres seems cca
1909 Hotchkiss X Limousine.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1911
Calthorpe 20HP Tourer
Another interesting photo received from a forum of old
photos asking for identification of a car believed to be a British
Tourer. -- Pretty biggish English Tourer. The
identification pointers are a humped round radiator above the tapering
bonnet line, single piece windscreen, with gas lights and quick fit
Rudge Whitworth wire wheels. Sape of radiator suggests the Birminhham
Calthorpe make, also motorcycles, and wire wheels suggest this is a cca
1911 Calthorpe Tourer, probably the
20HP.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1911 De Dion Bouton 14CV Torpedo
Cinema screen grab taken from a Spanish film "Los Chicos con
las Chicas" made in 1967 where cars are being investigated by
IMCDB. Film is vacation near a girls school where men are strictly
forbidden but one manages to get in as a music teacher. --
Small photo so difficult to be absolutely
positive; a vintage car no driver's door and longish bonnet goes to the
windscreen without a scuttle, which suggests pre-WW1. This would seem
to be a French cca
1911 De Dion Bouton 14CV Torpedo.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1911 Lion Peugeot Voiturette Racer
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for
identification of an early racing car with a Side radiator, --
We do not normally cover racers as lots of
one-offs difficult to identify. Our Ariejan Bos advises this is an
unusual cca
1911 Lion Peugeot Voiturette Racer
with V-2 engine capable of 100 km/h. Also made as a V4 of 3442cc.
Pictured on a drinks tray in hands of a Belgian driver, registration
13012 being Adrien Richard from Arlon.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913
Lozier 77 Touring
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos. What is the strange
numberplate. -- Member
and author Nick Young, of "Car Number Classics", advised this
is a General Identification Mark (later 1921 called Trade Plate). G is
for Glasgow, other two letters relate to garage concerned - usually
initial letters; number is third number issued to them. Car is likely cca
1913 Lozier 77 Touring possibly at
Robert Burns birthplace in Ayr, Scotland.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1914
Unic M1A Camionette
Cinema screen grab from French film 'Thomas l'imposteur'
(Thomas, the Imposter made in 1965 where cars are being investigated by
IMCDB. Film is set in First World War when Paris is about to fall to
the Germans, and convoy of cars tries to evacuate the wounded. --
Very blurry picture which suggests a lorry
type vehicle which has a 'bullnose' type of radiator. French, bullnose,
so relatively sure this is a later cca
1914 Unic M1A Camionette. Unic were by
then well into commercials and Taxis.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1920 Citroen Mod
A Conduit Interieure
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for
identification.. -- The
little pedal car is a facsimile of the Citroen 5CV Two-Seater Boat-tail
but is not the same as the big car on left, also a Citroen. Citroen
started in 1919 with the 10HP Model A, which was followed by a
relatively similar Model B in 1921, and a then a smaller Two-seater
Model C in 1921 for the Ladies. This would seem to be a
cca 1920 Model
A Conduit Interieure (saloon).

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1924
Citroenette 5CV Pefal Car
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for
identification. -- The
little car in the middle is a child's pedal car which has quite a big
history of its own. It is a facsimile of the 1922 Citroen 5CV
Two-Seater Boat-tail made by Ratier-Figeac company, makers of
propellers, a propeller car, and of prototype a
'Citroenette'
made in
1924, which when shown to Andre Citroen, immediately ordered 3,000 for
sale by distributors. *Full

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1924
Dodge Brothers 116 Touring
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for
identification. -- The little pedal car is a facsimile of the Citroen 5CV
Two-Seater Boat-tail but the big car on right n the background does not
seem French but American. It has a radiator of a Chrysler Group type
with similar shape rads, with Dodge suggested. It is slightly difficult
to be entirely sure from the photo but Mark thinks this is a
cca
1924 Dodge Brothers Series 116 Touring.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1924 SIMA-Violet 498cc
Monoplace
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK)
seems to be on the lookout for unusual cars, and wondered if we knew
what this one was? Photo in a box of old picks. --
Recent photo of a known vehicle seen at current Festivals of Slowth.
Devised by Marcel Violet from his 1919 SECAM cyclecar powered by a
Violet two stroke 496cc horizontal flat twin, the
1924-29
SIMA-Violet
was more streamlined, monoplace or twin seater, two-speed, also few
759cc and 1.5L. competitive: 3rd at 23 Boulogne GP

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1925 United Flatbed Lorry
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) f asking for origin or information on make. --
Easy name but a very difficult company to
trace or find any information on. Does not feature on any list of truck
manufacturers, Britain or America, or rest of world. Eventually tracked
down via sale of an enamel sign to being
The United Truck
Company,
Grand Rapids Michigan 1910. Later by 1925, The United Motor Products
Company, seemingly part of General Motors since 1918.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
c1927 Thermette Water Boiler
Following on from above, Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) did say that the little round
thing on the ground under right front spring is a The4rmette
- a device that nearly everyone in NZ had at one time. Invented by New
Zealander John Hart, it is able to boil 12 cups of water in five
minutes using only twigs and sticks, or petrol/kerosene, named as the
'Benghazi Boiler" by the Desert Rats. Cone shaped chimney makes
low pressure drawing through a water jacketcausing the water to heat
very quickly.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1927
Louis Chenard Saloon
Another photo from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) previously received 2020
from member Michel Gosset (France)
from French facebook page and puzzled as to make. -- A
rather bent automobile, not immediately obvious although name quite
clearly visible on radiator. Looks French, and defined by our Fer Cools
as a cca
1927 Louis Chenard Saloon, probably
the 10HP, made in Colombes. No connection with Chenard & Walcker of
Paris. Cars were made between 1920 and 1932 low volume.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1927 Erskine chassied Land Yacht
Popular photo of a unnamed 1927 RV received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) asking for identification. -- Two
names associated with MP 485; 'the Land Yacht and 'the Hotel on
wheels'. Letterhead from Coachbuilders A C Poultney names both. Concept
for the 18ft two-roomed 'Dawn' Light Cruiser seems to be from Noel
Pemberton Billings, Member of UK Parliament, adventurer and inventor.
It was built on an Erskine
Six chassis. Seems no great successes
in selling vehicle in USA.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1927 Vauxhall 14'40 Princeton Tourer
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for
identification. Looks like a Vauxhall, suggested 30'80. --
Aware of a Vauxhall 30'80, not 30'98, made
1913-27 and considered by some as best British Sports car on par with
Bentley but not developed due General Motors takeover 1925. Photo full
width louvres, metal disc wheels, and cantilever rear spring which
suggests to us this is a cca
1927 Vauxhall 14'40 Princeton Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1933 Unic 15CV H3 Berline
Cinema screen grab taken from a British film "Time for
loving" made in 1972 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB
Screenplay by a French playwright about Paris at start of WW2 from the
eyes of three couples who rent same artist's studio.--
Biggish car has an American appearance as was typical of that period
but has a bullnose type radiator, and carries a French numberplate, and
has pram irons at back. It would seem to be a cca
1933 Unic H3 Berline 15CV 8 cylinder
2646cc.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1936
Mercedes Benz 170 H Saloon
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK)
seems to be on the lookout for unusual cars, and wondered if we knew
what this one was? Photo found in a box of old cuttings.
-- This one was difficult in 2005 on our Help
Page 05 when there was very little on
the internet and all investigation had to be done in books. Looks very
much like a Volkswagen but is in fact a cca
1936 Mercedes Benz 170 H Saloon. There
were two variants: V for engine at front, or H for engine at
back; 38HP 4-cylinder 1697cc.
