:: [  SVVS  NATIONAL  AND   INTERNATIONAL  INFORMATION  ASSISTANCE SERVICE  ] ::

The SVVS Website currently receives approximately 500,000 hits a year and the "HELP PAGE" is internationally the most visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle  -   These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries received, and information that we have provided.  While page is being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,  cars are in year order:

Please note that if you are submitting an enquiry, we will assume that we have your permission
that we can publish the photo, background story to it, and your name and country calling from.

IDENTIFICATION/DATING:   SVVS HELP PAGES EXCEED 2,000 Enquiries Received and Identified

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1904 Daimler 12 HP
Lovely period photo received from one of our SVVS members Mike Gorman (UK) showing Pam's grandfather's car. The picture taken in Bermondsey. The car had been purchased from Lord Howard de Warden family. Believe photo taken pre 1908.  -- Registration is London County Council early 1904. The car is a cca 1904 Daimler 12HP, unlikely 22, probably a Tonneau but without curved scuttle.  The solid rear tyres seem to indicate hard work,  so perhaps used in estate hunting events?

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1904 Brushmobile 6HP 2 Seater
Period photo received from Paul Levey (UK) saying 'Picture of friends of wife's parents Harry and Kitty Bolton. Sadly, all long gone and we only came across this photograph recently.  Seems same location as on your website. 'Paid for' photo opportunity? -- This is a 1904 Brushmobile 6HP 2 Seater which seems to have been used as a 'photographer's prop' at/near Beaulieu. We have traced a number of photos of different unconnected people sitting in the car.  See also  HP41   HP96  and  HP99.

1904 Brushmobile 6HP Two-Seater

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1908 Star 9HP Swing-Seat Tonneau
Our good friend Leif Holmberg (Sweden) with whom we regularly correspond on identification of old car photos is currently investigating a photo taken in 1909 that could be the first car in his town of Storvik. Is it a Star?  --  Our Star expert thinks it is indeed a British made Star, most likely a 1908 Swing Seat Tonneau 9hp twin-cylinder ; the door handle releases the front passenger seat which then swings towards the driver, giving access to the rear seats. No connection USA Durrant-Star.

1908 Star 9HP Swing-Seat Tonneau

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1910 Labor 20'30 Landaulette
Cinema screen grab taken from a French film "Bandits en Automobile"  made in 1912 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. This period film is a parody of  the spectacular siege by Jules Bonnot's Gang at Choisy-le-Roi near Paris in 1912. -- Extremely unusual car made in the Pantin district of Paris by Weyher et Richmond to the design of De Cleves Chevalier who were the selling agents. This is a cca 1910 Labor Landaulette, biggish so probably the 20'30. Existed between 1907 - '12.

1910 Labor 20'30 Landaulette

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1910 Labor 20'30 Tourer
Cinema screen grab taken from a French film "Bandits en Automobile"  made in 1912 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. This period film is a parody of  the spectacular siege by Jules Bonnot's Gang at Choisy-le-Roi near Paris in 1912. -- ....and then two come at once, chasing each other ! Perhaps an early example of Product Placement. This is a cca 1910 Labor 20'30 Tourer. Rather confusing about the registration numbers  suggesting perhaps  three  Labor cars in  the film.

HELP ON HISTORY NEEDED:1912 Unic Type J2 Taxi
Email received from
Marc Sabbe (Belgium) who says he has a 1913 UNIC as per photo, which shows how the car was found and is now. In researching the car he found on the internet couple of cards showing perhaps the original car. Is there anyone who may have an idea about the history of that car with the number 61 on it? -- Regretfully we cannot help. If same car, then the Photo Card advises a Unic Type J2 Taxi 1908-14,  probably cca1912.  Help on this car would be appreciated!

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: c1924 Steyr Type VI Sport
Another fascinating photograph from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what this is?   -- A Supercar of its day made in Austria by a company established in 1864 as an weapon manufacturing company OWG. Bulls eye target logo, spitzkuhler radiator, vee windscreen, swept wings and with a boat tail, all add up to it being c1924 Steyr Type VI Sport, later racing 4.5 Steyr Klausen Sport.

c1924 Steyr Type VI Sport

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1924 Citroen 5HP Cabriolet
Cinema screen grab taken from a Spanish film "Gernika"  made in 2016 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. The film is about an American journalist and a lady censor in the Spanish civil war, and the events leading up to the carpet bombing and the destruction of the Basque town of Guernica by the Luftwaffe.  -- Lovely little French car designed by Edmond Moyet and Jules Salomon and manufactured in Quai de Javel in Paris,  a cca 1924 Citroen 5HP C3  with a Cabriolet body.

1924 Citroen 5HP Cabriolet

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1925 Lincoln Model L Touring
Another fascinating photograph from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what this is?   -- We are relatively sure this is an American cca 1925 Lincoln Model L Touring. Lincoln was started by Henry Leland who bought Cadillac after Henry Ford Left. Cadillac bought by General Motors so Leland left and founded Lincoln 1917. Went bust 1922 and bought by Henry Ford.  Now luxury cars worldwide.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1925 Delage DI SS Boat-tail Tourer
Another fascinating photograph from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what this is?   -- This is a competition vehicle which are sometimes difficult to nail down precisely because of body and other details being specific to individual cars. We are however relatively sure this is a French cca 1925 Delage DI SS Boat-tail Tourer. Delage were very successful  in many European  motoring competitions.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1925 Delage DI Saloon
Cinema screen grab taken from a Spanish film "Gernika"  made in 2016 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. The film is about an American journalist and a lady censor in the Spanish civil war, and the events leading up to the carpet bombing and the destruction of the Basque town of Guernica by the Luftwaffe.  -- Lovely French car manufactured in Levallois-Perret, Paris by a company founded 1905, much into racing,  lasting to 1953.  This is a  cca 1925 Delage DI Saloon.

1925 Delage DI Saloon

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1926 Brennabor Type R Limousine
Another photo received from our regular contributor Raoul Rainer from Stuttgart (Germany) from a batch of photos he purchased recently and has on a big website on line. Lovely photo of perhaps a 1920s Opel but bonnet doesn't match? --  First thought FIAT but wheels wrong. Not an Opel as rounded bonnet,  no mid-way hinge to bonnet and very peculiar wheel-nut arrangement which suggests a cca 1926 Brennabor Type R Limousine.  Front wheel hub different?  Closed 1945  when  Soviet  Zone.

1926 Brennabor Type R Limousine

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1926 Renault NN Torpedo
Period photo received from Tom Bon (UK). Picture has appeared on Facebook under community page Bargoed Past & Present. Trying to identify the car. Registration shows UD 1345. Location is at Gilfach, which is near Bargoed, Mid Glamorgan, South Wales. -- Registration UD 1345 is an Oxford County Council registration but no details pre-1929. The vehicle is French but unfortunately not possible to see shape of logo on bonnet which would help in dating;  so cca 1926  Renault  NN Torpedo.

c1926 Renault NN Torpedo

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1926 Willys Knight Model 70 Touring
Another fascinating photograph from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what this is?   -- Looks like a Buick but is not!  This is a Willys-Knight, but quite difficult to nail the precise model. The difficult bit is the quite wide upright between the hinge and the top of the side of the bonnet. Our Mark Dawber recons it is a cca 1926 Willys Knight  Model 70 Touring.  Seems  only one  to have  that  feature.

1926 Willys Knight Model 70 Touring

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1928 Rochet Schneider Charabanc
Surfing through the internet in attempting to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs or old Postcards, including those on Rootschat and those for sale on Ebay, of very interesting ancient machinery which has not yet been identified, so we have a go !  --   Interesting view of the old Monte Carlo town (Mount Charles), Port Hercules harbour and Monaco-Ville in the background. Vehicle is a pretty  cca 1928 Rochet Schneider Charabanc , made in France, in Lyon.

1928 Rochet Schneider Charabanc

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1928 Fiat 520 6 Saloon
Another fascinating photograph from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what this is?   -- This one is Italian from Turin. Big car, upright division line between bonnet and body rather than smooth, no hump on the centre of the bonnet, hinge on the crease line of the bonnet, steering wheel on left; we are relatively sure this is a  cca 1928 Fiat 520 6 Saloon. Deluxe upmarket car, 20,000 made 1927-1929.

1928 Fiat 520 6 Saloon

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1931 Alfa Romeo 8C Spider Corsa
Another fascinating photograph from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what this is?   -- Cannot quite read the date of the photo but this one is Italian from Portello, Milan. We are however relatively sure this is cca1931 Alfa Romeo 8C Spider Corsa.

1931 Alfa Romeo 8C Spider Corsa

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1931 Austin 16'6 Beaconsfield Saloon
Photo posted on AACA website by Dosmo (USA) saying any help would be appreciated in identifying this vehicle.   -- Definitely British and looks like a fabric covered Faux Cabriolet. Our Tony Oakes suggested Austin. Fabric covered bodies were much in fashion between 1920 and 1930, supplied by such companies as Weymann, and Gordon England who made fabric bodies for the Austin 7s. This car is also an Austin but is a cca 1931 Austin 16'6 Beaconsfield Fabric Bodied Saloon, Faux Cabriolet.

1931 Austin 16'6 Beaconsfield Fabric Bodied Saloon

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1934 Morris 5cwt Van
Period photo received from Paul Savage (UK) of his Father washing his Grandfather's van from his Warwick based Family Dairy business, "A.E.Savage Ltd" taken in 1935. He was 12 years old.  -- Registration ADU 211 is a County Borough Council of Coventry registration of summer 1934. The vehicle is British with a couple of pointers confirming the dating; It has a rear rear filler cap/tank and has slight upward kink on back of central body molding suggesting a cca 1934 Morris 5cwt Van.

1934 Morris 5cwt Van

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1936 Horch 830 Cabriolet
Cinema screen grab taken from a BBC made for TV Series "Fortunes of War"  made in 1987 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. The film is about a British lecturer and his new wife, who become members of the English community in Bucharest, Rumania on the eve of World War II.  -- Luxury German car from the Auto Union stable being a cca 1936 Horch 830 Cabriolet. IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1938 DKW F7 Limousine
One of a number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify the car in this photo?-- German car made by DKW ('Steam-driven Car' Co.) in Chemnitz (later Karl-Marx-Stadt, East Germany). From the quite large chrome hub caps this would seem to be c1938 DKW F7 Limousine, two-stroke, 2 cylinder front wheel drive. Became Auto Union, later Audi. Zwickau factory under Soviet control made IFA F8 from 1949-'55.

1938 DKW F7 Limousine

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1938 Mercedes Benz 230 Cabrio B
One of a number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this photo of a captured Mercedes vehicle in the town of Frankenberg in 1945 ?-- Yes indeed a Mercedes and a development of the W143. From the chrome hub caps this would seem to be an early cca 1938 Mercedes Benz 230 Cabrio B. The B stands for a two-door four-seater. This range of cars was made 1938 to 1943, and some 4,300 made, mostly in 1939.

1938 Mercedes Benz 230 Cabrio B

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Probably c1904-5 Peugeot 500cc
Cinema screen grab taken from a French film "Bandits en Automobile" made in 1912 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. This period film is a parody of  the spectacular siege by Jules Bonnot's Gang at Choisy-le-Roi near Paris in 1912. -- Peugeot badge was rectangular with six pointed 'corners', forward opening compartment on fuel tank, an oiler in front, two levers on cross bar. Engine seems of the later '05 cross-flow type, but front forks '03 type,  so cca 1904-5 Peugeot 500cc?

Probably c1904-5 Peugeot 500cc Motorcycle

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Perhaps c1914 Napier 30'45
Period photo received from Paul Savage (UK) taken around 1921 of his Grandfather when he worked for "Somerset Direct Dairies ". Radiator badge on this ex-military vehicle is too poor to make out.  -- Registration Y 6342 is Somerset CC 1919. Logo looks similar to Napier but Nick Georgano and Mick W-W don't think so. Name is diagonally underlined with a circle hoop. Foden logo has hoop but steam in period. Napier 30-45cwt were supplied in large numbers to British & Allied uses!

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Possibly 1936 Mercedes Benz G4 W31
One of a number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this photo of a German vehicle being used by Generalfeldmarschall von Mackensen?-- Von Mackensen was WW1 general who served vith Hitler in WW2. He died in 1945 at 95! The car is difficult to identify from small information but the pivoting top windscreen over two fixed small panes suggests this could possibly be a cca 1936 Mercedes Benz Type G4 W31.

Possibly 1936 Mercedes Benz G4 W31
