:: [  SVVS  NATIONAL  AND   INTERNATIONAL  INFORMATION  ASSISTANCE SERVICE  ] ::

The SVVS Website currently receives approximately 500,000 hits a year and the "HELP PAGE" is internationally the most visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle  -   These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries received, and information that we have provided.  While page is being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,  cars are in year order:

Please note that if you are submitting an enquiry, we will assume that we have your permission
that we can publish the photo, background story to it, and your name and country calling from.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1906 White Model F Steamer
Very faint photo taken in 1907 received from Mike Statham, part of the Research Team at the Friends of Insole Court, formerly Ely Court, Llandaff, near Cardiff in Wales. Could we identify the a hire car which took away Jessie & Richard O'Callaghan after their wedding.
-- Unusual car for England but not for Llandaff as one there already. An American steam driven car made in Cleveland by a company founded in 1900 and still around in 2001. This is  cca 1906 White Model F  Steamer Limousine.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1907 Napier 45HP Special Limousine
Brilliant high quality photos sent to us by Mike Mackrill (UK) who has a website devoted to this subject called Nostalgic Picture Library.
Can we help out with the car? -- Puzzling gorgeous cca 1907 Napier 45HP. Perhaps in c1913 rebodied limousine hearse, or built with a ramp for a disabled person. No funerial decorative elements, has curtains, speaking aperture in the partition glass, very narrow rear hatch doors but not easily suitable for coffin loading. No idea on precise use for car?

Lovely period photo sent to us by Josanne Stroud (UK) saying she would be very grateful if we could help identify the car.
Photo is of her Grandfather in in Australia about 1910. -- My immediate thought was it could be a Humber but one of our wise sages thinks it is a cca 1908'9 Mass 15 HP Tourer. Mass was car made in Curbevoie, France by Leon Pierron but largely sold in Britain by Masser-Horniman, badged as Mass. Cars badged Pierron were available in France but had different engines.

This one, LD 5339 was registered with London County Council and is a cca 1909 Renault AG Landaulette Taxi AG Renaults were made 1905-1910.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1912 Crossley 15HP Tourer
Lovely period photo sent to us by Josanne Stroud (UK) saying she would be very grateful if we could help identify the car.
Photo was given to her by her father, of his mother taken in 1916. Grandmother was General Sir Ian Hamilton driver in WW1. -- General Hamilton was in charge of Mediterranean Expeditionary Force during the Gallipoli Campaign. The British military ordered many thousands of Crossley cars, trucks, and ambulances used widely.  This looks the smaller cca1912 Crossley 15HP.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913 SCAR 9'11CV Torpedo
Unusual car being investigated by AutoPuzzles, and is one which we have identified. Being quite uncommon, and therefore useful in spotting similar cars, it warrants a mention in these pages. --  This car was manufactured in the Champagne region near Reims in France by the Société de Construction Automobile de Reims (SCAR) founded 1906. This is a cca 1913 SCAR 9'11CV Torpedo. WW1 which ravaged the area resulted in SCAR not really starting up again. Became agents for Mathis.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1914 Singer 10 Light Car
Picturesque period photo sent to us by Martin Fiennes of Broughton Castle Banbury, Oxon (UK) saying the photo is of a couple leaving Broughton Castle. He cannot identify the couple or car, so info on date may help.
-- Broughton Castle was used for BBC2’s brilliant 'Wolf Hall' series about Cromwell/Henry 8th. The car is more recent but as the numberplate cannot be seen, precise dating is not possible. This is cca1914 Singer 10 Light Car. Tens with this rad were 1911 to 1914, £200.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1916 Overland Model 83 5P Touring
Couple of  interesting photos sent to us by
Mike Statham (UK) requesting identification. Photos were taken somewhere in Kashmir 1919 to 1921. They were in his grandfather's collection from his time in the army in India (parts now Pakistan). Not very good snaps, taken with a simple box camera and certainly 620 contact prints. -- Indeed blurry and difficult to make out but from the radiator and  wheelhubs, we are relatively sure this is a  cca 1916 Overland Model 83 5P Touring.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1918 Republic Fire Truck
Picture posted by Steve Hagy on the AACA website (USA) asking for identification.  --  This is obviously a fire engine and seems to be marked ridgeway. Lots of Ridgeways in the US. The base of the fire engine is a truck chassis with a finned radiator manufactured by The Republic Motor Truck Company in Alma Michigan which in 1918 was recognised as the largest excusive truck manufacturer in the World. This is a cca 1918 Republic Fire Truck.  Became American La France 1928,  ends White '51.

I think it is German but not sure."  --  We have recently placed a photo of a very similar car onto this Help Page. It is indeed German made car and is also a 'tulip bodied phaeton'. The bodywork was frequently called 'tulip bodied phaeton' due to the greatly curved upper part of the bodywork suggestive of a tulip.  Very fashionable shape in  Germany  and  Austria.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1934 Opel 1.3 Limousine
Number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this vehicle photoed in the Weimar Republic?
Probably date them pre-1933 Germany (1933/35) -- My original thoughts was that it could have been American but it seemed a little small in size. So what was American in Germany; Opel amongst others. And indeed this is a cca 1934 Opel 1.3 Limousine. Not quite possible to see if 2 or 4 door.  Made  only  1934/35.

1934 Opel 1.3 Limousine

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1937 Cord 812 Sedan
Another fascinating photograph from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what this is?   --  Yes, the first American car to have front wheel drive with independent suspension, following on the heels of the French Citroen Traction Avant, and first with hidden headlamps. This is the sensational cca 1937 Cord 812 Sedan.  Lycoming 4.7L V8 125 HP.  The supercharged version  had external  exhaust pipes.

1937 Cord 812 Sedan

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Probably c1938 Opel Blitz Bus
Number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this vehicle photoed in the Weimar Republic?
Probably date them pre-1933 Germany (1933/35) -- Commercial vehicles are not our speciality so we do not claim to have a positive identification but from the wheels/hubcaps and little of the bonnet seen,  we feel this is a cca 1938 Opel Blitz Bus. Coachbuilders would have similar bodies on other makes.

Probably c1938 Opel Blitz Bus

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1947 Lincoln Continental
Another fascinating photograph from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what this is?   --  The chap in the photo looks very pleased with himself, and well he should. He has a rather snazzy American car that is impressive even in America. This is a cca 1947 Lincoln Continental. From the photo angle, not possible top say if Coupe or Sedan. Part of Ford, used as  state  limousines  by Presidents!

1947 Lincoln Continental

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Unidentified 1910's Landaulette
One of a number of high quality interesting photos sent to us by Mike Mackrill (UK) who has a collection of old glass negatives relating to early days of aviation and who has a website devoted to this subject called Nostalgic Picture Library.
Can we help out with the cars?? -- Not in this case as there are too many flowers covering every possible identification feature. Coachwork would be by others so no help on car make. Only feature visible is the rear hub,  which we cannot  remember!

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Unidentified c1914 Tourer
Number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this vehicle photoed in Austro Hungary?
-- My thoughts from the shape of radiator header is that this is an Italian  cca 1914 Bianchi. Our Ariejan Bos thinks it could be a German 1909 Opel Doppelphaeton and non standard radiator. Others think it could be 1911 Austro Daimler.  Still a mystery?

c1914 Unknown Tourer.
