Daimler 9HP Charabanc
Two photographs received from our contributor
Ariejan Bos (Holland), one
copyrighted, registered DY20 and DY21, asking if they were MMC?
--
Advice from David Hales with some
Hastings registration says both were Daimlers, 15th December 1903.
DY21 was 9HP Charabanc but converted to 6HP 1907. Both numbers
were used by Skinner & Co of Hastings on a variety of vehicles
mostly with MMC connections but he suspects that even those
registered as Daimlers were in fact MMCs

Milnes 16HP Tonneau
Photograph posted on the PreWarCar
website asking for identification. --
Our contributor Ariejan Bos
identified this as a cca 1902 Milnes 16HP Tonneau.
Interesting make; Milnes was operative 1901/2. Becomes sole agent
in 1901 for British Empire with German Motorfahrzeug und Motorenfabrik
Berlin; German chassis UK Body. Daimler takes over MMB 1902, stops
cars and concentrates on commerials sold in UK under Milnes-Daimler
name. MMB also made electric and petrol electric
cars. |

Mercedes 40HP
Brougham
A
photo received from Carole
MacPherson (UK) saying
the
photograph is of her grandfather, Alfred Elborn probably taken in early
1900's at either Sherfield Manor, Hampshire or Lyne Grove, Surrey, when
he was chauffeur to the South African randlord, Jim B Taylor. ('Ranlords'
were controllers of gold/diamond mines in the 'rand' of Witwatersrand;
knew Barney Barnato, father of Wolf Barnato, 1920s 'Bentley Boy' racing
millionaire). -- The
car is a German cca 1904 Mercedes 40HP
Brougham.

Horch Tourenwagen
We had an earlier invitation from Leif Holmberg
(Sweden) to
visit the website of Automobilhistoriska Klubben where there are many
photographs recently placed of cars needing investigation. One had
a very puzzling logo. --
Some time has passed without
identification but our colleague Ariejan Bos suggested some
black&white thinking as this is actually a multisection badge
having two two white panels in the centre, top
and bottom; a German cca
1910’11 Horch Tourenwagen.

MAF D4 Two-seater
Another lovely photo found on the AACA
website posted by Leif Holmberg (Sweden)
asking for identification of the five vehicles. Photo origin is
Sweden. -- Not
much response was received as these cars were very difficult to
identify. The car on the right of group with a rounded radiator and
badge high on the false radiator was made by Markranstädter
Automobilfabrik in Markranstädt, Germany, and is a cca
1911 MAF D4 Two-seater which had a
1192cc air cooled engine of 12HP.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1911'13
Horch Tourenwagen
Another lovely photo found on the AACA
website posted by Leif Holmberg (Sweden)
asking for identification of the five vehicles. Photo origin is Sweden. --
The three cars in the middle are cca
1911 to 1913 Horch Tourenwagen, the
left one seems to be chassis form. Subsequent to identification of the
cars it has been suggested that photo may have been taken by the car dealers
Erik Lundvik in Stockholm who at that time imported the
German Horch and also the MAF range of vehicles.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1913
MAF F5 Two-seater
Another lovely photo found on the AACA
website posted by Leif Holmberg (Sweden)
asking for identification of the five vehicles. Photo origin is
Sweden. -- Not
much response was received as these cars were very difficult to
identify. The car on the left of group with a strange false 'beaky'
radiator was made by Markranstädter Automobilfabrik in Markranstädt,
Germany and is a cca
1913 MAF F5 Two-seater which had a
1375 air cooled engine of 14HP. MAF ceased
manufacturing in 1923.

Horch Van
Cinema screen grab of a vehicle
which appeared in a silent German documentary film "Berlin: die
Sinfonie der Großstadt" (Berlin: Symphony of a City) made in 1927 where the vehicles are being investigated by
IMCDB. The film documents and describes every-day life in Berlin
not long after WW1. --
This car has remained unidentified for a very long time. It appears to
be a 'black maria' with a Teutonic radiator finally been identified by
Ariejan Bos as a cca 1915
Horch Van.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1917
Ford Model T Touring
Another very interesting photograph from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what this is? --
Transverse
front spring which confirms the immediate appearance of a Model T.
Dating is a bit more difficult because no bulkhead sideligts, has
possible undertray below the starting handle, but has no
demountable rims, and has un upright 40/60 windscreen, suggesting
a cca
1917 Ford Model T Touring. |

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1917
Studebaker 18 Model ED Touring
A photo
received from Peter Ward from Redfern (Australia)
saying this is his Great Grandfather
William George Anderson. Born 1878 Wycheproof, Victoria. Died 1933
Heidelberg, Victoria, Australia. He was a 'motor driver' in Victoria,
Australia. -- We
thought a 1915 Studebaker 6, but one of the AACA experts noted there
were seven wheel clamp bolts which suggests it is at least a cca 1917.
It is a big car with long wheelbase so is likely cca
1917 Studebaker Series 18 Model ED Touring.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1918
Ford Model T Touring
A photo received from Ron Jones of the
Liverpool History Society (UK)
saying he would appreciate our help to
identify the make and likely year of the car in the attached photograph.
The only clue he can give is that the photograph was taken in
Liverpool. -- KB
6532 is a Liverpool CBC registration but no data available for accurate
dating. Car is American, probably not built in UK, Trafford Park, as
left hand drive. Transverse front spring, rounded bonnet, electric
lighting, a cca
1918 Ford Model T.

Cadillac V63 Eight Phaeton
Another very lovely photograph from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. This photograph was sent
as a help in identifying a previous car needing identification. --
This photo shows a large well dressed
rich family group obviously enjoying their rather posh tourer, and
is yet another American car in Romania. Must have been a very good
market for the US. This is a
cca 1924 Cadillac V63 Eight Phaeton. |

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1924 Stewart Buddy Delivery Truck
Another couple of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. This vehicle worked for
biggest bread factory in Romania in Bucharest - Otto Gagel. --
It is interesting that Flor keeps
coming up with pictures of American vehicles in Romania. This is a
relatively unusual van from the Buffalo based commercial vehicle
manufacturer being the earlier cca
1924 Stewart Buddy Delivery Truck. |

Bentley 4.5 Special
A photo
received from Chris Knight (UK)
found at a recently bought friend's house in the Lake District. Could we
identify it? -- Quite
well known sporting Bentley
which has been campaigned quite extensively by various owners. The
registration is YF15, registered London CC in July 1926. David Rhodes
provided bottom photo showing Brian Morgan driving same car in 1962 at
the Bentley Driver's Club meeting at Esso House. We have not been able
to find out who driver is in original photo.

Morris Oxford Tourer
A photo received from Chris Boone
from King's Lynn asking if we could identify this car which his father
owned in 1931. -- This
was a set of three photos scanned from a photo album but sent to us at a
very small blurry resolution. We need to receive the photos at BEST
RESOLUTION possible, as it is the detail that provides the
identification. Fortunately the Wilts CC numberplate MR 9346 gave us the
year and the frontal aspect of the dipping headlamp bar says cca 1927
Morris Oxford Tourer.

Buick Master 6 Sport Touring
Another very interesting photograph from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what this is? -- American
again. Wire wheels which would have been optional. Lady's
head mascot, widow's peak radiator, bullet shaped headlights,
side-mounted spare tyre all spell out a cca
1928 Buick Series 120 Master 6 Sport Touring,
confirmed by headlights being chromed.
Two million Buicks built by '28 since 1904! |

Hispano Suiza H6B Tourer
Another request for identification of a vehicles received from our regular
contributor Joao Ferreira (Portugal)
who says 'Photo from the archives of ACP
shows an imposing vehicle surprised in a bad moment of is
life". -- Hispano
but difficult, as hard from this angle to see any identification features.
Spare wheel in the mudguards. The headlamp tie bar sweeps inwards.
Marchal headlamps, windscreen mounted spot. No stork. Best guess is
this is a French cca
1928 Hispano Suiza H6B Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1929 Lagonda 2L Tourer
A photo
received from Tim Gell (France)
who's school friend in Canada is pondering on the
fate of his mum's Lagonda
abandoned in a barn in Wales in 1939. Does it still exist?. -- No
longer in DVLA records. Lagonda Car
Club advise they know of the car but is not on their current database.
Seems was registered at Surrey CC 3rd June 1929, then bought second hand
by a couple of Garages and sold to a Mr Brown of Twickenham. Broken up
in 1957 but engines still survives in another 2L.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1930
Goliath Three-wheeler
Cinema screen grab of a car
which appeared in a German documentary "100 years of the
Automobile" made in 1985 where the vehicles are being investigated by
IMCDB. Documentary was to celebrate the centenary of the automobile
in 1885. --
Three wheeler, left hand drive, semaphore indicators each side of
windscreen, two small outrider lights, single wiper blade, all point to
this being a cca
1930 Goliath made by Goliath Werke
Borgward & Co. It has
a non standard dummy radiator.

Ford Model 18 Fordor Sedan
Another very interesting photograph from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what this is? --
The V8 insignia on the wheel hubs
helps to say it is V8 powered. The same insignia on the headlamp
tie-bar announces that Ford was making history with introducing
the V8 engine to the mass market. This is a cca 1932 Ford Model 18
V8 Fordor Sedan. Similar body on the Four but without the
V8. |

Plymouth PE Convertible Coupe
Couple of photos from Rob Haesloop,
Pinetown (South Africa) compiling
family history in German Concession Areas of pre-Communist Northern
China. Pictures show a fox/goose hunting trip in 1950 in swampy
Seratinka, near Tientsin. Family were ejected in 1951, so car could be
mid '40s. -- Ten
years out. Round bonnet mascot, winged rad mascot, louvers and vent
doors on bonnet side, pinpoint this to an American cca
1934 Plymouth PE CC Convertible Coupe,
with two registration numbers.

DKW F91 Maisterklasse Saloon
A photo received from Joe Otway (UK)
saying a family member took the picture and
he has been searching for some time and not getting far. It looked a
little Swedish but couldn't find a Volvo or Saab that match. -- Not
really surprising as the car is German. SXY14 is a London County Council
Registration of 1956 but with shuttered grille and no indicators this
looks a front wheel drive Auto Union product, being a cca
1954 DKW F91 Meisterklasse Saloon
with 900cc two-stroke engine.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1957
Austin A105 Westminster
Cinema screen grab of a car
which appeared in a German Edgar Wallace crime fiction series "Der
Buclige von Soho" (The Hunchback of Soho) made in 1966 where the vehicles are being investigated by
IMCDB. American girl heiress is kidnapped and Scotland Yard
investigates! --
The car being investigated is the cca
1957 Austin A105 Westminster Saloon in
the background. The film 'police' car in the foreground (with
spring 1961 numberplate) is cca 1961 Wolseley 6/110.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Probably
c1910 Cadillac Model 30
Cinema screen grab of a car
which appeared in an American silent movie " The Mothering Heart" made in
1913 where the vehicles are being investigated by IMCDB. Husband
becomes sucessful, goes with a rich lover, gets abandoned, returns to
wife. --
Very grainy photos so difficult to be positive, but from rear
transverse spring and curved bonnet top, it is probably
a cca 1910 Cadillac Model 30 Landaulet.
Studebaker-Garford also had transverse rear but had wavy bonnet top.

cca 1913 Raceabout
Another fascinating photograph from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. This one has no
background to help with identification. -- A
number of our experts have had a look at this one and we have sent it to
some of our external experts. No positive identification back. Best guess
as most period photos from Florin feature American cars, this could be
American and possibly a cca1913 Metz Model 22 Runabout.
