Renault Type B
Photo received from Edward Scott (UK)
asking for our thoughts on the make / model of the attached? The
passenger is his wife's great great grandmother aged 86.
-- Two of our
experts think it is a cca
1900 Renault Type B 2.75HP with a De
Dion Bouton Engine. Louis Renault was button maker turned car maker who
trained at boilermaker Delaunay Belleville. Started car manufacture
with Model A in a boat house in family back garden. Renault used De
Dion and Aster engines until 1903.

Niclausse 15HP Landau
Interesting cinema screen grab of a vehicle
which appeared in a British TV mini-series "A woman of substance" made in
1984, where the vehicles are being investigated by IMCDB. Story
about a woman rags to riches rise and attempts of kids to remove her
from her business. --
This took some searching as the car is a quite rare and only three said
to survive. Made in France by a company of boilermakers, hence round rad,
this is a
cca 1907 Niclausse 15HP, - with a
padded seat for a poodle!

Brasier Tourer
We had an invitation from Leif Holmberg
(Sweden) to
visit the website of Automobilhistoriska Klubben where there are many
photographs recently placed of cars needing investigation. We have had
a look at a few and have come up with some answers. --
Made by a French 1850 photographic
equipment manufacturer Richard, with brothers Georges initially with
Belgian Vivinus connections and were joined by Brasier from Mors,
who then left to form Unic. This is cca
1907 Brasier Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1908
Daimler Double Deck Bus
Slightly grainy photo received from Jane
Shrimpton (UK)
specialising in dating dresses, of a local Brighton/Hove bus, with
driver and conductor. It is undated, but from dress clues it is about
1910-ish?
-- Registration
was issued by London County Council 1906 to 1908, so probably went to Brighton
a number of years later. Relatively sure the chassis is a
Daimler and the body could be by the
people mentioned on the plate on the bonnet, but too low res to make
out. Looks terminus at Kemp Town?

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1908
Vauxhall A & 1907 Benz Sports
Photo received from B. Williams (USA)
asking if we could identify the two automobiles in the photo. He
believes the auto on the right is a Type A Vauxhall. --
Indeed yes, the car on the right is a
cca
1908 Vauxhall Type A. A were made from
1908. Both cars appear to carry a BK registration which appears British
and would have been issued by Portsmouth CBC. No dating data remains.
The car on the left appears to be earlier and looks a cca 1907 Benz Tourer. Interesting Scout scene.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1911
LGOC Type B Double Deck Bus
Another interesting photo received from Jane
Shrimpton (UK)
specialising in dating dresses/fashion, of a London bus being being
traffic directed by a policeman. She was interested in dating the bus.
-- Registration
letters are not quite clear but appear to be LA which is a London
County Council issue in Summer 1911. The bus is therefore a cca 1911
LGOC Type B Double Decker built by the London General Omnibus Company,
originally Anglo-French company, operating London busses.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1912
Sunbeam 12'16 Tourer
Photo received from William Hall (UK)
who is the Star Membership Secretary, saying he put a cca 1919 photo on
the PreWarCar website but that they have not come up with an
identification. -- In
view of such esteemed lack of competition we confirmed with John
Warburton and Bruce Dowell that this indeed is a
cca 1912 Sunbeam 12'16 Tourer (possibly
16'20 but would need to see the axle). We all agree that the body
is quite unusual, and is unlikely to have been
made by Sunbeam.

Siddeley Deasy Ambulance
Photo received from Alan Weeks (UK)
saying he had come across this fascinating car on an RFC/RAF website.
Thought we might like to identify it. --
Great selection of photos on this site
which appear to have no identifications or comments. This photo is of a
cca 1913 Siddeley Deasy Military Ambulance. Captain Deasy had left the
company he founded and was replaced by JD Siddeley, from Wolseley.
Became Siddeley Deasy and 1919 became Armstrong Siddeley to 1960.

Minerva Knight Tourer
We had an invitation from Leif Holmberg
(Sweden) to
visit the website of Automobilhistoriska Klubben where there are many
photographs recently placed of cars needing investigation. We have had
a look at a few and have come up with some answers. --
This one has the radiatior which is
typical of a Minerva from Belgium but also has a telltale statuette on
the filler car which says this is a cca
1913 Minerva Knight Tourer.
Minerva retained the Knight engine throughout its
production.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1914
Morgan Grand Prix
Photo received from Alan Weeks (UK)
saying he had come across this fascinating car on an RFC/RAF website.
Thought we might like to identify it. --
Great selection of photos on this site
which appear to have no identifications or comments. This photo is of
an early cca
1914 Morgan Grand Prix car made after
a Morgan three wheeler won the French Grand Prix at Amiens in 1913. It
was excluded at the RAC Lightcar and Cyclecar Trial in 1914 because of
only having three wheels !

Darracq 16HP Tourer
We had an invitation from Leif Holmberg
(Sweden) to
visit the website of Automobilhistoriska Klubben where there are many
photographs recently placed of cars needing investigation. We have had
a look at a few and have come up with some answers. --
This one comes from Suresnes, France from
a 1885 Gladiator bicycle manufacturer. Made licensed Leon Bollee
electric cars and in 1900 the first of line of great successes. Also
founded ALFA. This is a cca 1914 Darracq 16hp Tourer.

REO 5 Passenger Touring
We had an invitation from Leif Holmberg
(Sweden) to
visit the website of Automobilhistoriska Klubben where there are many
photographs recently placed of cars needing investigation. We have had
a look at a few and have come up with some answers. --
Made by Ransom Eli Olds in Lansing
Michigan, USA, when he left the Olds Motor Works in a huff in 1904 when
the directors wanted to discontinue the Curved Dash. Formed new co in
1905, and this is a cca
1915 REO 5 Passenger Touring.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1919
Calthorpe 10HP Tourer
Interesting photo received from Nick
Jeffrey (UK) taken
in early January 1920 near Marylebone Registry Office where the
occupants had just got married. He is American, she is English. Amazing
website, - thank you for your dedication in developing it. --
Your comments much appreciated !! Registration
letters are not quite clear but appear to be OE which is a Birmingham County
Borough Council issue in Summer 1919. The little car built in
Birmingham
is cca
1919 Calthorpe 10 Tourer.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1920 Benz E6 Touring Car
We had an invitation from Leif Holmberg
(Sweden) to
visit the website of Automobilhistoriska Klubben where there are many
photographs recently placed of cars needing investigation. --
This car has a spitzkuhler radiator
typical of the period and looks like a large post WW1 Benz. Benz
had a round badge with white background centrally on the rad point. Our
John Warburton agrees and thinks this is bigger than the
W10 or DS2 so is probably a cca
1920 Benz E6 27/70 Tourer.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1923
Daimler Landaulette
Interesting cinema screen grab of a vehicle
which appeared in a British TV mini-series "A woman of substance" made in
1984, where the vehicles are being investigated by IMCDB. Story
about a woman rags to riches rise and attempts of kids to remove her
from her business. --
This looks like a cca
1923 Daimler Landaulette, probably D16.
Daimlers of the day were considered more respectable than Rolls Royce
and were used by monarchs of many
countries including UK and Russia.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1929
DeSoto K Coupe perhaps
Slightly grainy photo received from Goran
Persson (Sweden)
taken in the wilds of Sweden probably shot 1937. His mother and her
sister, with their husbands on their way from Vindeln (near Umeå) to
Umfors (close to Tärnaby). Is it possible to identify it? -- The photo
is a bit fuzzy, shot from the back, and the entire car is hidden; - so
not much difficulty there! Pity the chap in the dickey seat! Looks like
a coupe from the smooth roof. Educated guess has it perhaps cca
1929 DeSoto K Coupe.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1936
Frazer Nash Shelsey
Unusual enquiry from Andrew Kerr (UK)
who is attempting to identify a vehicle shown in cutaway form on
a print by James A. Allington. The print's owner is interested in
selling it to raise funds for a small charity he runs, so would be
interested to know value.--
Our John Warburton confirms this is the
1939 Frazer Nash Shelsey that Allington owned and which went up for
auction in 2002, and Tony Clarke of MotoringArt thinks that
it does not look like any special
limited edition drawing.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1937
Wanderer Glaser Cabriolet
Very landscapy photo received from Raoul
Rainer from Stuttgart (Germany) which
he had purchased in an atiques shop in Austria. Carries post war
licence plate bur Raoul thinks the car is 1930s. -- Taken
from a difficult angle, we are relatively sure this is a cca
1937 Wanderer Cabriolet with coachwork
by Glaser.
Audi, Horch and Wanderer had very similar bodies
for a while but we think this is a W23 or W24. Little confused by
wheels with holes and full width rear bumper.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1939
Morris 25 S3 Saloon
Photo received from Jason Graham, Dunedin (New
Zealand) saying he is looking at this car
as a restoration project. What can we tell him?
-- This is a cca
1939 Morris 25 S3 Saloon. Only about a
thousand were built between 1937 and 1939. This is a Series 3 model, a
big car with a 3.5 litre 6 cylinder engine, 95.4 BHP, three speed
gearbox, top of the range, and probably quite a rare car. Body colur
radiator cowl, later models had a proper exterior access boot, which
not clear from photos?

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1903
Unknown Two Seater
One of three photos received from Gordon
Jamieson (UK)
asking if we can identify the cars. They all belonged to
his great-grandfather who had a bicycle shop on The Wirral in Cheshire.
His first car was a curved dash Oldsmobile. By 1911, on the census return
he was a
cycle and motor agent. -- CM
184 is a Birkenhead CBC issue of 1903 but none of our experts have been
able to pinpoint the make. It looks like a French Lacoste based car which
was sold in UK under a number of other names.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:Perhaps
a cca 1919 Hillman 11HP
Picture posted by Phil Crane on the AACA
website asking for identification. Photographed in 1927 England but he thinks
it is not British. -- Another
car that has not been fully cracked. Primary identification feature is
the the two sets of four bonnet louvers divided by a lifting handle.
Handle is of the UK pattern as are the louvers. We are relatively sure
this is a cca
1919 Hillman 11HP made in Coventry.
Our John Warburton suggested the Autocrat but it
had three louvers?

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:cca
1923 American Touring Car
One of a couple of photos received from Claude
Wiegand (USA)
who is trying to find out the model name and year of the car that
his grandparents owned. -- The
photo has a major developing fault in it which splits it into two
sections. No problem to repair but no help once repaired. None of our
experts have been able to nail it, not even our friends at the AACA. We
thought it was a cca 1923 Buick, others thought a mid 20s
Hudson, yet others Lexington, and some it is a Flint.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1925
Unknown Spitzkuhler Radiator
Another photo received from Dmitry Dashko (Russia)
asking for our opinion on the make of the attached? Year
indicated is 1925 Russia.
-- Although this
looks easy, none of our experts have been able to come up with a name.
The shape is common to a number of cars from 1920s Germany, Austria and
Italy. The spitzkuhler radiator is not detailed enough. The radiator
star mascot confuses even more but could have been a political
one. Shortlist of makes is Durkopp, Fiat, NSU and Puch.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING: Rolls Royce Silver Ghost
Barker Tourer
Lovely photo received from Mohammed Khan (Abu
Dhabi) who is trying to trace three
Rolls Royces which belonged to his Great-Great-Grandfather Nawab Rasool
Yar Jung of Hyderabad-Deccan, India. The picture is of Silver
Ghost Barker Tourer RR 61-CW; also searching for Phantom 1
Connaught Tourer 83-SC and a Hooper Cabriolet 12-NC.
--
We regret this enquiry is too specialised
for us as we have no ways of tracing individual cars. We have published
the details in case anybody has any information to help. Rolls Royce
Enthusiasts Club have records.
