hoping we or one of our readers can identify the vehicle in this photo
held by the State Library of Victoria in Wilf Henty Collection. --
Link problems so we could not download a
big photo and asked for copy; no reply. However we noted from the thumb
that we had already identified a different source of this photo in 2017

Delahaye Double Phaeton
Lovely photo received from our Member auto historian Nicholas Young (UK)
who wrote the door-stopper encyclopedia 'Car Number Classics' detailing
histories of original cars/owners of first registrations issued 1904
UK. -- AR 26
was issued in 1903 to a French
'Delahaye Type 1 Double Phaeton' owned
by Noel Kenealy, editor of Motoring Illustrated, who objected to new
law banning 15 year olds driving, so obtained a driving licence for
Samuel Sharp, shown in driving seat, who was blind!

Interesting photo received from Chris Pitt Lewis (UK)
of a
car probably taken at Springfield House, Ludlow in the first
decade of the 20th century. Can we advise him of the make and model of
the car? The gentleman with the large moustache is his great grandfather F W Macaulay and lady in the back is

cca 1903/4 Ariel Rear Entrance Tonneau, probably

Adler Droschke
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for ID. --
This is from a series of known postcards
featuring same car and people that we had identified in 2004 on Help
Page O3 as a Adler from Germany. No side frame to rad so likely cca
1904/5 Adler 8'14 or 24'28. Car is
fitted with a taxameter, so a Droschke, a taxi. Not obvious in the
photo but two jump seats are behind the driver, so vehicle could carry
five in the back, and two front.

Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for identification.
Caption advises 'General De Lacroix …on a Mieusset'. -- Our
veterans expert Ariejan Bos advises car is the earlier cca
1905'6 Mieusset Open Drive Limousine,
presumably the 28HP. Made in Lyon France by a fire extinguishing
equipment manufacturer. For short time targeted at USA car market with
six big sizes cars. Only lorries made after WW1, as long as 1925.

Roteix enquiry (below). -- Unusual car, with a circular bonnet with concentric
circle radiator believed to be a c
1906 Ansermer 8HP Two Seater made by a garage owner Louis Ansermer in Geneva Switzerland
who was otherwise a dealer but for a year made fewown cars
using de Dion Bouton engines. Actually c1906

Cottereau 8HP Two Seater
Another interesting set of coincidences prompted
by the photo received from Mark Dawber
(New Zealand) actually named in a
publication as a cca 1906 Ansermer 8HP Two Seater. We had assumed
the identification was correct and placed it as such. --
However we immediately received
notification from our veterans expert Ariejan Bos that despite
similarities this a cca
1906 Cottereau Two Seater made in
Dijon France by firm started by racing cyclist Louis Cottereau
1898.

Straker Squire Omnibus
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for ID. --
Location Swan & Sugarloaf in Croydon,
now Tesco supermarket. -- Oversize radiator suggests a British supplier
with licence from German company Bussing to supply initially German
made Bussing busses from Bristol, then London. Over 350 in use in
London by 1908. These are cca
1907 Straker Squire double-deckers
made in 24/34/40HP versions, including petrol-electric.

Chase Surrey
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for identification. --
Surrey bodied chain driven charabanc,
solid rubber high-wheeler which looks very American, and wild west.
Actually, built in New York by a company making ploughs for local
farmers! Built as a car that could be converted to a truck, this is a
cca 1909
Chase Surrey, probably 1 Ton chassis,
with a 20HP three cylinder air cooled two-stroke engine. Later rucks to
1917.

Couple of puzzling photo received from
Nicholas May (Australia)
showing vehicles owned by his great Uncle living near Wolverhampton in
UK in 1910-14 period. Can we identify car.--
Suggested possibles regretfully wrong. The
limiting factor is much taller rad than bonnet. Our Ariejan Boss
advises he thinks this is a cca
1912 Singer Two Seater still with
round emblem. Our Singer expert Simon Bishop agrees and indicated photo
of a 15HP tourer with the round logo on striped rad.

Mysterious dark photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for identification ID.
Could it be a small Lorraine Dietrich as they bought Isotta Fraschini
1907? --
Unlikely according my records, possibly
resemblance to Belgian Minerva, but advised by Ariejan Bos this is a
rather obscure French car, a cca
1912 Ronteix 10HP Tourer from company
in Levallois-Perret, Paris, between 1906 and 1914 who made mainly small
cars and cyclecars. Read

Another interesting photo received from Mark

a forum of old photos which entirely coincidentally follows on from the
Roteix enquiry (above). -- A row of
cyclecars in front of a restaurant and motor mechanic. Interesting to
note that the rear two cars are fitted with no tyres suggesting these
could be new? These little cars are cca
1913 CID Cyclecars, single cylinder
6CV, manufactured in Dijon by Constructions Industrielle Dijonnaise

Singer Two Seater
Couple of puzzling photo received from
Nicholas May (Australia)
showing vehicles owned by his great Uncle living near Wolverhampton in
UK in the 1910-1914 period. -- This
one had us all puzzled so asked enlargement of wheehub which advised
'Singer'. Research in Singer circles by our Simon Bishop did not lead
to definite conclusion on this car. It was suggested probably a cca 1911/13
Singer Two-Seater. It looks a medium
sized car so likely either a 14HP or 15HP. Read

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1913
GWK 8HP 2 Seat Tourer
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for identification.
Maybe the engine is behind the driver like in a GWK? --
Spot on. This is indeed a GWK but an early
one. GWK (Grice Wood and Keiller) started production of cars with
friction drive cross mounted rear Coventry Simplex twin 1045cc engines
in 1911. From the scoop instead of louvres on the bonnet, this is the cca
1913 GWK 8HP 2 Seat Tourer & Dickey.
Petered out by 1923.

Tweenie Cyclecar
Subsequent to investigating the Singer car with the Tweenie
Devil mascot we looked into the Tweenie and determined it was a car
marketed by Alfred Dunhill of the tobacco fame.-- Further investigation
suggested that the car was actually built in France by Godefroy &
Leveque who built the 'SUPER' cyclecar with tandem seating available in
England via E Jozot as ELBURN RUBY and in 1913

Arrol Johnston 15.9HP Tourer
Another of puzzling photo received from our regular contributor Alun
Pugh from Leeds (UK) of vehicle shown on
this glass slide. -- Registration
FJ 1737 was issued by Exeter CBC in approx 1922, to a car made at the
other end of the UK in Glasgow Scotland by maker of steam trams joining
yje builder of Forth Bridge. Made UK's first car, including one for
Shackleton at South Pole. This one is a cca
1922 Arrol Johnston 15.9HP Tourer then
£650. Became Arrol Aster but was gone by 1931.

capable seating of up to 18 people or made as van / small lorry powered
by 4 cylinder 10HP engine.

Bugatti Type 43A

French TV Series "Arsene Lupin" made 1971-90 where cars are
being investigated by IMCDB. Series was based on Maurice Leblanc's
gentleman master thief Arsène Lupin who was featured in over 50
stories starting in 1905. -- Company
started in Germany, the cars having been made in France and carries an
Italian name after the founder who was the son of a Milanese jewellery
designer. This jewel is a
cca 1928 Bugatti Type 43A with a
Belgian body.

company specialising in field artillery tractors in WW1. Went into
making most Paris cleansing vehicles. 1945 became Peugeot, 1955 became
Saviem.

This is a car from a French company
having a German licence to make the Daimler car in 1887. Became
pioneers and major player in motoring introducing many patents still
being used. This is a cca
1930 Panhard Levassor X69 Limousine.
Popular Dyna 1960s. Last Panhard built 1967.

Singer Junior Saloon
Another interesting photo found during research of the
Singer items above showing an unidentified car in 1933. Known picture
shown on a number of websites. -- The
picture shows a man spraying a car with a hand stirrup pump while next
to a bucket over which is a notice 'Dip Your Feet'. This
was during the 1931 Foot & Mouth outbreak affecting cattle in the
UK. I remember doing much the same procedure in 1967 and 2001. The car
shown is a cca 1931 Singer Junior 8HP Saloon.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:c1980
Toyota Hiace Campervan
Another photo received from Annika Fuchs
(Germany) taken while on one of their
journeys and could not identify what it was . Can we help? -- Not
as easy as it looks. We think it is a
Toyota Hiace
Campervan. Hiace was
a Japanese commercial van which was made in various countries and
models, and is still made today. This is probably Second Generation
vehicle 1977-1982. It was made in 1.6L 1.8, and 2.0L petrol, and in
2.2L Diesel variants. Rebuild or not used a lot as it looks in good
condition.
