:: [  SVVS  NATIONAL  AND   INTERNATIONAL  INFORMATION  ASSISTANCE SERVICE  ] ::

The SVVS Website currently receives approximately 500,000 hits a year and the "HELP PAGE" is internationally the most visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as new, and owning Vintage photo  or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle  -   These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries received, and information that we have provided.  While page is being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,  cars are in year order:

Please note that if you are submitting an enquiry, we will assume that we have your permission
that we can publish the photo, background story to it, and your name and country calling from.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:  1901 Toledo Model B Steamer
Web Link from Automotive Historian Jenny Fawbert (Australia) hoping we or one of our readers can identify the vehicle in this photo held by the State Library of Victoria in Wilf Henty Collection. -- Link problems so we could not download a big photo and asked for copy; no reply. However we noted from the thumb that we had already identified a different source of this photo in 2017 on our Help Page 118 as a c1901 Toledo Model B Steamer by the American Bicycle Co., in Toledo Ohio.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:  1903 Delahaye Double Phaeton
Lovely photo received from our Member auto historian Nicholas Young (UK) who wrote the door-stopper encyclopedia 'Car Number Classics' detailing histories of original cars/owners of first registrations issued 1904 UK. -- AR 26 was issued in 1903 to a French 'Delahaye Type 1 Double Phaeton' owned by Noel Kenealy, editor of Motoring Illustrated, who objected to new law banning 15 year olds driving, so obtained a driving licence for Samuel Sharp, shown in driving seat, who was blind!

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1903 Ariel Rear Entrance Tonneau
Interesting photo received from Chris Pitt Lewis (UK) of a car probably taken at Springfield House, Ludlow  in the first decade of the 20th century. Can we advise him of the make and model of the car? The gentleman with the large moustache is his great grandfather F W Macaulay and lady in the back is great grandmother.  -- Our veterans expert Ariejan Bos advised the car  in the photo is a British  cca 1903/4 Ariel Rear Entrance Tonneau, probably the 15HP. Read  more history.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:  1904 Adler Droschke
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for ID. -- This is from a series of known postcards featuring same car and people that we had identified in 2004 on Help Page O3 as a Adler from Germany. No side frame to rad so likely cca 1904/5 Adler 8'14 or 24'28. Car is fitted with a taxameter, so a Droschke, a taxi. Not obvious in the photo but two jump seats are behind the driver, so vehicle could carry five in the back, and two front.

Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) from a forum of old photos which entirely coincidentally follows on from the Roteix enquiry (below). --  Unusual car, with a circular bonnet with concentric circle radiator believed to be a c 1906 Ansermer 8HP Two Seater made by a garage owner Louis Ansermer in Geneva Switzerland who was otherwise a dealer but for a year made fewown cars using de Dion Bouton engines. Actually c1906 COTTEREAU. Below for Ansermer.

Another interesting set of coincidences prompted by the photo received from Mark Dawber  (New Zealand) actually named in a publication  as a cca 1906 Ansermer 8HP Two Seater. We had assumed the identification was correct and placed it as such. -- However we immediately received notification from our veterans expert Ariejan Bos that despite similarities this a cca 1906 Cottereau Two Seater made in Dijon France by firm started by racing cyclist Louis Cottereau  1898.   Read  more.

Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for identification. -- Surrey bodied chain driven charabanc, solid rubber high-wheeler which looks very American, and wild west. Actually, built in New York by a company making ploughs for local farmers! Built as a car that could be converted to a truck, this is a cca 1909 Chase Surrey, probably 1 Ton chassis, with a 20HP three cylinder air cooled two-stroke engine. Later rucks to 1917.

Couple of puzzling photo received from Nicholas May (Australia) showing vehicles owned by his great Uncle living near Wolverhampton in UK in 1910-14 period. Can we identify car.-- Suggested possibles regretfully wrong. The limiting factor is much taller rad than bonnet. Our Ariejan Boss advises he thinks this is a cca 1912 Singer Two Seater still with round emblem. Our Singer expert Simon Bishop agrees and indicated photo of a 15HP tourer with the round logo on striped rad.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:  1912 Ronteix Tourer
Mysterious dark photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for identification ID. Could it be a small Lorraine Dietrich as they bought Isotta Fraschini 1907? -- Unlikely according my records, possibly resemblance to Belgian Minerva, but advised by Ariejan Bos this is a rather obscure French car, a cca 1912 Ronteix 10HP Tourer from company in Levallois-Perret, Paris, between 1906 and 1914 who made mainly small cars and cyclecars.  Read  more.

Couple of puzzling photo received from Nicholas May (Australia) showing vehicles owned by his great Uncle living near Wolverhampton in UK in the 1910-1914 period. -- This one had us all puzzled so asked enlargement of wheehub which advised 'Singer'. Research in Singer circles by our Simon Bishop did not lead to definite conclusion on this car. It was suggested probably a cca 1911/13 Singer Two-Seater. It looks a medium sized car so likely either a 14HP or 15HP. Read more.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:  1913 GWK 8HP 2 Seat Tourer
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for identification. Maybe the engine is behind the driver like in a GWK? -- Spot on. This is indeed a GWK but an early one. GWK (Grice Wood and Keiller) started production of cars with friction drive cross mounted rear Coventry Simplex twin 1045cc engines in 1911. From the scoop instead of louvres on the bonnet, this is the cca 1913 GWK 8HP 2 Seat Tourer & Dickey. Petered out by 1923.
